Morgan\/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The cruise left Tampa, Florida on Feb. 1, setting out on a seven-day voyage that would see stops in Mexico, Honduras and Belize before returning to the U.S. on Saturday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruisemapper.com\/ships\/Radiance-Of-The-Seas-563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CruiseMapper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC said the outbreak was reported to its Vessel Sanitation Program on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The sick passengers and crew members have been isolated from the rest of the people on the ship, the CDC said. The ship has also &#8220;Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures&#8221; and &#8220;collected stool specimens \u2026 for testing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBS News has reached out to Royal Caribbean for more information.<\/p>\n<h2>Tracking outbreaks on ships<\/h2>\n<p>The CDC&#8217;s Vessel Sanitation Program tracks illness outbreaks on cruise ships each year.<\/p>\n<p>While it did not specify what caused the latest outbreak, it says\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/norovirus-cases-surging-parts-of-us-cdc-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">norovirus<\/a><\/span> is often the culprit for such outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Finding the agent that caused an outbreak (causative agent) can take time,&#8221; the CDC said.<\/p>\n<p>Norovirus, which is sometimes called the &#8220;cruise ship virus,&#8221; causes more than 90% of diarrheal disease outbreaks on cruise ships, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/norovirus\/outbreak-basics\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CDC<\/a>. However, norovirus outbreaks can happen anywhere, and outbreaks on cruise ships account for only a small percentage of all reported norovirus outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 2,500 reported norovirus outbreaks in the U.S. each year. <\/p>\n<p>In 2025 so far, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vessel-sanitation\/cruise-ship-outbreaks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CDC has logged<\/a> six outbreaks on cruise ships \u2014 three of which were attributed to the norovirus.
