It opened in 1885.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Five of the injured are in serious condition, and a child is among the injured, the National Institute for Medical Emergencies said in a statement. Officials have not released the nationalities of the victims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the crash remains unclear. Lisbon is in mourning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The yellow-and-white streetcar, which goes up and down a steep downtown hill in tandem with one going the opposite way, was lying on its side on the narrow road that it travels along.<\/p>\n<p>Its sides and top were partially crumpled, and it appeared to have crashed into a building where the road bends. Several dozen emergency workers were at the scene, but most stood down after about two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Eyewitnesses told local media that the streetcar careened down the hill, apparently out of control. Carris, the company that operates the streetcar, said scheduled maintenance had been carried out.<\/p>\n<p>Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa&#8217;s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidencia.pt\/atualidade\/toda-a-atualidade\/2025\/09\/presidente-da-republica-lamenta-grave-acidente-do-elevador-da-gloria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a statement<\/a> that the president &#8220;deeply regrets the accident&#8221; and expressed &#8220;his condolences and solidarity with the families affected by this
