Kennedy Jr.&#8217;s leadership<\/a><\/span> in the aftermath of the firing of the CDC director last week, claiming he is &#8220;endangering every American&#8217;s health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What the health and human services secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has done to the CDC and to our nation&#8217;s public health system over the past several months \u2014 culminating in his decision to fire Dr. Susan Monarez as CDC director days ago \u2014 is unlike anything we had ever seen at the agency and unlike anything our country had ever experienced,&#8221; the nine former directors and acting directors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/01\/opinion\/cdc-leaders-kennedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a> in the op-ed in The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-director-susan-monarez-ousted\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">attempted to oust<\/a><\/span> CDC Director Susan Monarez last week, less than a month after she was confirmed by the Senate, although her lawyers have pushed back on the legality of her firing. Meanwhile, several other <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/senior-cdc-officials-resign-after-monarez-ouster-cite-concerns-over-scientific-independence\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">top CDC officials have resigned<\/a><\/span> in recent days, pointing to disagreements with the Trump administration over its vaccine policy, among other things. CBS News reported last week that Jim O&#8217;Neill, the deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-deputy-jim-oneill-acting-cdc-director-susan-monarez-ouster\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">has been selected<\/a><\/span> to serve as the acting director of the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>In their op-ed, the former CDC directors who served under both Democrat and Republican administrations, pointed to a number of decisions by Kennedy that they say are &#8220;unlike anything we had ever seen at the agency,&#8221; including canceling investments into <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-halts-500-million-for-mrna-vaccine-research\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">medical research<\/a><\/span> and the move to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-removes-members-cdc-immunization-advisory-committee-acip\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">replace members<\/a><\/span> on a key vaccine advisory committee, among other things.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Firing Dr. Monarez \u2014 which led to the resignations of top CDC officials \u2014 adds considerable fuel to this raging fire,&#8221; the former CDC directors added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CDC leaders said they &#8220;applaud Dr. Monarez for standing up for the agency and the health of our communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The loss of Dr. Monarez and other top leaders will make it far more difficult for the CDC to do what it has done for about 80 years: work around the clock to protect Americans from threats to their lives and health,&#8221; they wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the former CDC directors also called on Congress to exercise its oversight authority over the department of Health and Human Services. The CDC is one of a number of agencies under the HHS umbrella.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, called on HHS last week\u00a0 to &#8220;<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sen-cassidy-postpone-vaccine-advisory-meeting-cdc-departures\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">indefinitely postpone<\/a><\/span>&#8221; its vaccine advisory committee meeting scheduled for Sept. 18 amid the slew of CDC departures. And the Louisiana Republican, who delivered the key vote to advance <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/senate-to-vote-on-rfk-jr-s-confirmation-for-health-human-services-secretary\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Kennedy&#8217;s confirmation<\/a><\/span> as secretary, also said the &#8220;high profile departures will require oversight by the HELP Committee.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Cassidy was asked Tuesday evening if he regretted his vote to confirm Kennedy, he said, &#8220;This is about children&#8217;s health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is about how we protect the children of the United States of America,&#8221; Cassidy continued. &#8220;And there&#8217;s allegations that that health is being endangered. I&#8217;m not presupposing anybody&#8217;s right or wrong. We got to get to the bottom of it, and it&#8217;ll take radical transparency.
