{"id":45524,"date":"2025-09-02T21:37:42","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T21:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/disney-to-pay-10-million-to-settle-ftc-lawsuit-over-collecting-kids-data\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T21:37:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T21:37:42","slug":"disney-to-pay-10-million-to-settle-ftc-lawsuit-over-collecting-kids-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/disney-to-pay-10-million-to-settle-ftc-lawsuit-over-collecting-kids-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney to pay $10 million to settle FTC lawsuit over collecting kids&#8217; data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-0\">\n<section class=\"content__body\">\n<p>Disney will pay $10 million to settle allegations by the Federal Trade Commission that the entertainment company facilitated the &#8220;unlawful collection&#8221; of children&#8217;s personal data.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/DisneyComplaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">complaint<\/a> filed on Tuesday, the FTC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/09\/disney-pay-10-million-settle-ftc-allegations-company-enabled-unlawful-collection-childrens-personal?utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> that Disney Worldwide Services and Disney Entertainment Operations \u2014 two entities that offer technical support and media content \u2014 violated the Children&#8217;s Online Privacy Protection Rule, known as COPPA, by failing to properly label some videos uploaded to YouTube as &#8220;made for kids.&#8221; The mislabeling also exposed children to &#8220;age-inappropriate YouTube features,&#8221; the FTC said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/09\/disney-pay-10-million-settle-ftc-allegations-company-enabled-unlawful-collection-childrens-personal?utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our order penalizes Disney&#8217;s abuse of parents&#8217; trust, and, through a mandated video-review program, makes room for the future of protecting kids online \u2014 age assurance technology,&#8221; FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Signed into law in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/105th-congress\/senate-bill\/2326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1998<\/a>, COPPA requires commercial website operators to disclose to parents of children under 13 that they are collecting personal data and obtain the parents&#8217; prior consent.<\/p>\n<p>The videos in question included content from Disney movies including &#8220;Coco,&#8221; &#8220;Frozen&#8221; and &#8220;Toy Story&#8221; and as well as music from &#8220;The Incredibles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Disney told CBS News that the settlement does not involved Disney-owned and operated digital platforms and that it is limited to some of the content on the company&#8217;s YouTube platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Disney has a long tradition of embracing the highest standards of compliance with children&#8217;s privacy laws, and we remain committed to investing in the tools needed to continue being a leader in this space,&#8221; the spokesperson said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>YouTube requires videos to be labeled as &#8220;made for kids&#8221; if children are the video&#8217;s primary audience or if the content reflects &#8220;an intent to target children,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/9528076?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the Alphabet-owned platform.
