But my body wasn&#8217;t responding the way it used to. I knew my body was missing something it needed,&#8221; she said in the ad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The answer for her, she continued, was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/weight-loss-drugs-warning-data-david-kessler\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">GLP-1s<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the campaign, Williams has lost 31 pounds in 8 months using GLP-1s, though it is unclear which drug she has used. The campaign noted she used another GLP-1 provider before Ro, which currently offers Zepbound, Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Drugs known as\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ozempic-wegovy-weight-loss-drugs-shortage-prescriptions\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/a><\/span>\u00a0mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1, which helps <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ozempic-glp-1-class-drugs-used-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">signal fullness to the brain<\/a><\/span> and regulate blood sugar. Ozempic is typically used for diabetes while Saxenda, Wegovy and Zepbound are approved for weight loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Williams, now a celebrity patient ambassador for Ro, also spoke to the stigma surrounding the popular weight loss drugs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re on GLP-1s too, don&#8217;t let anybody tell you it&#8217;s the &#8216;easy way out.&#8217; You&#8217;re not taking a shortcut, you&#8217;re taking care of yourself, and that takes courage,&#8221; she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/serena-williams-lost-31-lbs-using-weight-loss-medication-exclusive-11794831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">People<\/a> magazine on Thursday, Williams said she feels &#8220;really good and healthy.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel light physically and light mentally,&#8221; she told the magazine. &#8220;I just can do more. I&#8217;m more active. My joints don&#8217;t hurt as much. I just feel like something as simple as just getting down is a lot easier for me. And I do it a lot faster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first famous face to open up about their use of the medications.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/oprah-winfrey-weight-loss-medication-people-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Oprah Winfrey revealed<\/a><\/span> she turned to a weight-loss medication after years of struggling with her weight. Videos on social media showing dramatic transformations have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7igrG2YNW7k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increased demand<\/a> in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The medications don&#8217;t come without risks, however. For example, the most <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ozempic-side-effects-weight-loss-drugs-wegovy-mounjaro-doctors-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">common side effects<\/a><\/span> of Ozempic are nausea, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the drug&#8217;s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some people have reported severe GI-related issues, including <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/weight-loss-drugs-labeled-risks-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">gastroparesis<\/a><\/span>, a paralysis of the stomach also called delayed gastric emptying.
