At its debut, Zelle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zellepay.com\/press-releases\/early-warning-announces-zelle-network#link=%7B%22role%22:%22standard%22,%22href%22:%22https:\/\/www.zellepay.com\/press-releases\/early-warning-announces-zelle-network%22,%22affiliate%22:%22%22,%22target%22:%22_blank%22,%22absolute%22:%22%22,%22linkText%22:%22launched%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> the digital payment network would be a &#8220;faster, safer way&#8221; for people to send and receive payments &#8220;within the security of their financial institution,&#8221; according to the company.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2024, the app has 151 million users, according to Zelle&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zellepay.com\/press-releases\/zelle-shatters-records-1-trillion-sent-single-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The push to launch Zelle led to design oversights that made the network &#8220;an obvious conduit for fraudulent activity,&#8221; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/court-filings\/people-of-the-state-of-new-york-v-early-warning-services-llc-complaint-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0alleges. Those alleged flaws include Zelle&#8217;s quick registration process and lack of verification, which James claims made it easy for scammers to infiltrate the service.<\/p>\n<p>The limited information shown to customers during transactions also allowed fraudsters to use false or fraudulent email addresses to trick consumers, she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;EWS knew from the beginning that key features of the Zelle network made it uniquely susceptible to fraud, and yet it failed to adopt basic safeguards to address these glaring flaws or enforce any meaningful anti-fraud rules on its partner banks,&#8221; the New York AG&#8217;s office claimed in its statement.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also alleges that EWS failed to enforce rules to prevent fraud, even though it knew its partner banks were violating them.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to CBS News, a Zelle spokesperson called the lawsuit a &#8220;political stunt&#8221; and said it was a &#8220;copycat&#8221; of a similar lawsuit the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/about-us\/newsroom\/cfpb-sues-jpmorgan-chase-bank-of-america-and-wells-fargo-for-allowing-fraud-to-fester-on-zelle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">filed in December<\/a>, which was dismissed in March.
