{"id":43459,"date":"2025-08-13T16:44:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T16:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/social-security-cost-of-living-adjustment-could-be-2-7-in-2026-according-to-new-estimate\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T16:44:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T16:44:39","slug":"social-security-cost-of-living-adjustment-could-be-2-7-in-2026-according-to-new-estimate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/social-security-cost-of-living-adjustment-could-be-2-7-in-2026-according-to-new-estimate\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Security cost-of-living adjustment could be 2.7% in 2026, according to new estimate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Social Security beneficiaries could see a 2.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) next year, which is slightly more than the 2.5% boost U.S. retirees\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/cola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">received<\/a>\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/seniorsleague.org\/tscl-cola-projection-8-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimate<\/a> comes from the Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group, which posted its prediction on its website on Tuesday after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-july-2025-inflation-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">inflation figures<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>AARP also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/social-security\/early-look-cola-increase-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">released<\/a>\u00a02026 COLA estimates from experts, such as Mike Lynch, managing director of applied insights at Hartford Funds, who predicted a more modest adjustment in the &#8220;low to mid&#8221; 2% range, up to 2.7%.<\/p>\n<p>The Social Security Administration makes a cost-of-living adjustment <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/social-security-cola-increase-2025-cost-of-living-adjustment\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">each year<\/a><\/span> to ensure benefits payments for U.S. seniors keep pace with inflation. The yearly adjustment, which the agency is scheduled to announce in October, would go into effect in January 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The SSA did not immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch&#8217;s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Each fall, the agency uses inflation data from July, August and September to determine the COLA for the next year. The consumer price index (CPI), a basket of goods and services typically bought by consumers that tracks the change in prices on everyday items over time, showed that the inflation rate in July held steady at 2.7% on an annual basis, the same as it was in June.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the inflation rate has remained below 3% since the start of 2025. However, experts predict it could inch up later in the year as tariffs <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/inflation-prices-higher-tariffs-trump-federal-reserve-beth-hammack\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">put more pressure<\/a><\/span> on consumer prices. Alan Detmeister, an economist at UBS, told CBS MoneyWatch that he estimates headline CPI will rise to 3.7% and core CPI will rise to 3.8% by the second quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa Ghilarducci, a labor economist at New York City&#8217;s New School, believes inflation will likely rise and is concerned that a moderate cost-of-living adjustment &#8220;probably won&#8217;t be enough to cover the inflation rates that we&#8217;re headed into,&#8221; AARP reported.<\/p>\n<p>According the the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/social-security\/early-look-cola-increase-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AARP<\/a>, the 2.5% COLA adjustment introduced this year boosted the average Social Security retiree&#8217;s payment by about $49 a month. The average monthly Social Security check for all beneficiaries was $1,861 in June 2025 and $2,005 for retired workers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seniorsleague.org\/cola-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the Senior Citizens League.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the COLA, some senior citizens will also benefit from a provision included in President Trump&#8217;s &#8220;big, beautiful bill&#8221; which provides a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/big-beautiful-bill-social-security-tax-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">temporary tax deduction<\/a><\/span> of up to $6,000 for Americans aged 65 and older.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>    <!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/mary-cunningham\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Mary  Cunningham<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Mary Cunningham is a reporter for CBS MoneyWatch.
