In some kids, like in Charlie&#8217;s case, they are born with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss as well as progressive vision loss,&#8221; Dr. Divya Chari of UMass Memorial Medical Center said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But now Charlie can hear thanks to cochlear implants, small electronic devices that were surgically placed in her at UMass Memorial Medical Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\"><span class=\"img embed__content\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" alt=\"Charlie cochlear impants \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/02\/04\/d073d080-273a-49af-b130-8ae487f861e3\/thumbnail\/620x349\/ddc605484e3ae0228c3ee760082c8638\/baby1.jpg?v=d54d11a41ff0a005a15d3290716e6f92 1x, https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/02\/04\/d073d080-273a-49af-b130-8ae487f861e3\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/413c299c1816fb48d55435664786e730\/baby1.jpg?v=d54d11a41ff0a005a15d3290716e6f92 2x\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><span class=\"embed__caption\">10-month-old Charlie, who has Usher syndrome, heard for the first time thanks to cochlear implants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                CBS Boston<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For mom and dad, the procedure is life-changing. &#8220;To know she can hear and understand the sounds like birds chirping and being able to experience that. And knowing that she&#8217;s going to go blind, I wanted her to really experience everything she could,&#8221; Tyler Sinclair said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For Charlie, she was really deprived of the hearing sense. She wasn&#8217;t getting any sensation of sound,&#8221; Dr. Chari said. &#8220;So, the first time those cochlear implants were activated, was the first time she heard her dad&#8217;s voice. She had never heard that before.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Charlie making remarkable progress<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s only been a week, and the family says Charlie is showing remarkable progress. The procedure is also helping her develop cognitive skills and her balance. &#8220;Not only can she hear, but she&#8217;s crawling, she&#8217;s sitting on her own,&#8221; mom Erin Sinclair said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Filled with a lot of spunk and energy, the family says Charlie will still need a lot of extra services and they are raising money online to help with her development and listening skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s particularly important for someone like Charlie because when she loses her vision in the future, having another sense like hearing is critical for her,&#8221; Dr. Chari said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The family is grateful for the support they received from UMass Memorial Medical Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an adventure every day,&#8221; Tyler Sinclair said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a positive adventure.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think she&#8217;s definitely ready to tackle the world,&#8221; Erin Sinclair said.<\/p>\n<p>    <!--
