The illnesses result in about 53,300 hospitalizations and more than 900 deaths annually, according to CDC estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-25-107606?utm_campaign=usgao_email&amp;utm_content=daybook&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cited<\/a> this week by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).<\/p>\n<p>The economic impact of these diseases is severe, costing an estimated $75 billion (in 2023 dollars) annually, including costs associated with secondary chronic illnesses and conditions that develop after the initial illness, according to the findings published Monday by the GAO, which also cited research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s Economic Research Service.<\/p>\n<p>The actual count of people who get sick from eating food is unknown and likely far higher than official tallies, as only a small percentage of illnesses related to contaminated food is diagnosed and reported to public health officials. For every case of salmonella detected through a lab test, for example, 29 illnesses are caused by the bacteria, the CDC estimates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/understanding-how-ecoli-spreads-after-mcdonalds-quarter-pounder-outbreak\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">Understanding how E. coli spreads after McDonald&#8217;s Quarter Pounder outbreak<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">04:31<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last year, separate salmonella outbreaks linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/outbreaks\/cucumbers-11-24\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cucumbers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/outbreaks\/eggs-09-24\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eggs<\/a> sickened more than 200 people in dozens of states, while listeria outbreaks linked to ready-to-eat meat and poultry products <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/listeria\/outbreaks\/meat-and-poultry-products-11-24\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sickened<\/a> 19, hospitalized 17 and killed two. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/e-coli-o121.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">outbreak<\/a> of E. coli in the fall of 2024 linked to organic carrots sickened 48 people in 19 states, killing one. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/e-coli-O157.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">linked<\/a> to onions served in McDonald&#8217;s burgers <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mcdonalds-e-coli-outbreak-quarter-pounder-burgers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sickened more than 100<\/a><\/span> people in 14 states, resulting in one death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least 30 federal laws govern the safety and quality of the U.S. food supply, both domestic and imported, and 15 federal agencies administer the rules, making for a &#8220;fragmented&#8221; oversight system, according to the GAO, a federal agency charged with supplying nonpartisan information to Congress.
