But the drugmaker said it expected sales growth to slow in 2025, as competition increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Novo Nordisk <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/20\/business\/ozempic-novo-nordisk-wegovy.html\" title=\"\">retains its title as Europe\u2019s most valuable company<\/a>, but its share price has dropped about 40 percent since it peaked last June as analysts worried about uncertainty in demand for obesity drugs and the performance of new drugs in trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cLast year was a tale of two halves,\u201d said Emily Field, an analyst at Barclays. The first half of 2024 offered \u201clots of overall excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But then data suggested that prescriptions for obesity drugs were growing slowly in the United States, and a few trial results for drugs in the company\u2019s pipeline came in lower than expected, Ms. Field added. President Trump\u2019s election also weighed on pharmaceutical companies in general amid potential changes to health care policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There\u2019s been \u201ca lot of uncertainty,\u201d she said as investors grew more concerned about whether sales of obesity drugs could really <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/weight-loss-drug-forecasts-jump-150-billion-supply-grows-2024-05-28\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">meet the industry\u2019s lofty expectations<\/a> of a market larger than $100 billion in the coming decades. Novo Nordisk\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/11\/well\/live\/ozempic-mounjaro-weight-loss-diabetes.html\" title=\"\">main competitor is the American drugmaker Eli Lilly<\/a>, which also sells obesity drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday, Novo Nordisk said its <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ml-eu.globenewswire.com\/Resource\/Download\/365675dd-10f3-4293-9aec-ede9f63375c6\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">revenue jumped 25 percent last year<\/a> to 290 billion Danish kroner, or $40.6 billion, driven by growing sales in the United States, and reported profit of more than 100 billion Danish kroner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It expects sales growth of 16 to 24 percent in 2025, less than the previous year, because of increasing competition and pricing pressures. But the company said it was still seeing strong demand for obesity treatments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe number of people living with obesity is very, very large, so this is a market we are just starting to serve,\u201d Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen, the drugmaker\u2019s chief executive, said on a call with reporters on Wednesday. The 2025 guidance assumes \u201ca quite significant ramp\u201d in sales in the United States, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company\u2019s share price rose about 5 percent on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Novo Nordisk has been repeatedly thrust into the limelight in recent weeks by Mr. Trump and his new administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has said he doesn\u2019t like obesity drugs, is Mr. Trump\u2019s nominee for health secretary, a post that would give him <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/22\/health\/rfk-jr-ozempic-drugs-fda.html\" title=\"\">some power<\/a> over access to the drugs. And last month, Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/08\/us\/politics\/trump-greenland-denmark-ozempic.html\" title=\"\">threatened tariffs on Denmark, Novo Nordisk\u2019s home country<\/a>, in a spat over Greenland. Novo Nordisk manufacturers some of its drugs in the United States, but it still imports the active pharmaceutical ingredient, semaglutide, for some of its most popular injectable drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Karsten Munk Knudsen, the company\u2019s chief financial officer, said in an interview on Wednesday that the company had a lot of optimism for 2025. But \u201cwe are not na\u00efve in terms of everything that\u2019s happening around us,\u201d he added. \u201cGeopolitics is probably more volatile currently as compared to what it\u2019s been in the past few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the past few weeks, the threats and imposition of tariffs have created a lot of uncertainty for business leaders around the globe. Although Mr. Trump postponed tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico this week, he proceeded with additional tariffs on Chinese goods and warned that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/03\/us\/politics\/trump-tariffs-european-union.html\" title=\"\">tariffs on the European Union would \u201cdefinitely happen.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Novo Nordisk began this year recovering from the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/view-novos-next-gen-obesity-drug-candidate-trial-disappoints-2024-12-20\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">disappointing trial results<\/a> of its next-generation weight loss drug CagriSema. After a late-stage trial slightly missed expectations, the company\u2019s share price plunged 20 percent on a single day in late December. But Mr. Jorgensen said the company remained \u201cconfident in the biology of CagriSema.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Novo Nordisk also said that it expected to file for the first regulatory approval of CagriSema in early 2026. Last month, results for an early-stage trial of a new drug, amycretin, performed well, pushing up the company\u2019s shares.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion
