She was viewed as somewhat surprising pick for the CDC role because unlike most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/museum\/history\/pastdirectors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent<\/a> CDC directors, she holds a Ph.D. but is not a medical doctor.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CDCgov\/status\/1950322766680383621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Monarez &#8220;brings decades of distinguished experience in health innovation, disaster preparedness, global health, and biosecurity&#8221; to the agency, and will help advance the &#8220;mission to Make America Healthy Again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At her confirmation hearing before the Senate&#8217;s Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP) committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.help.senate.gov\/hearings\/nomination-07-09-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on July 9<\/a>, Monarez garnered praise from the Republican chairman, Sen. Bill Cassidy, who is a physician, for her commitment to rebuilding public trust in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Democrats on the committee grilled her about the impact of cuts in federal funding for health programs and medical research, and expressed concern about the CDC&#8217;s role under Health and Human Services Secretary <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-preventive-health-panel-concerns-medical-associations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monarez was questioned by committee members about a range of health topics. Here are some of those highlights.<\/p>\n<h2>Monarez on vaccines<\/h2>\n<p>Monarez faced a number of questions about vaccine recommendations.\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-cdc-vaccine-advisory-panel-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Kennedy<\/a><\/span>\u00a0has been a longtime <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-many-lives-vaccines-have-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">vaccine critic<\/a><\/span> who has pushed a <a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/rfk-kennedy-politifact-lie-of-year-2023-autism-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">discredited theory<\/a> linking routine childhood shots to autism, but during her hearing, Monarez refuted that view and stated that she has &#8220;not seen a causal link between vaccines and autism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amid a growing <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-us-cases-record-high-since-1992\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles outbreak<\/a><\/span> this year, Kennedy has\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-measles-vaccine-deadly-texas-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">acknowledged the vaccine&#8217;s efficacy<\/a><\/span>\u00a0against the disease while still saying he supports individual choice. In a March interview with CBS News, Kennedy publicly encouraged people to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-measles-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">get the measles vaccine<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I&#8217;m confirmed as CDC director, I look forward to supporting the secretary with science and evidence, and making sure that I am giving him the best information possible,&#8221; Monarez said at her confirmation hearing. &#8220;Measles is an important health threat and we have to make sure we are doing everything that we can to prevent and mitigate it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Monarez was also asked about the continued availability and affordability of vaccines if the CDC&#8217;s vaccine advisory panel, made up of new <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-cdc-vaccine-advisory-panel-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">RFK Jr. appointees<\/a><\/span>, makes changes to recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vaccines absolutely save lives, and if I&#8217;m confirmed as CDC director, I commit to making sure we continue to prioritize vaccine availability,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Monarez on fluoride<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/removing-fluoride-water-cavities-jama-health-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Fluoride<\/a><\/span>, another topic Kennedy has spotlighted, was also a subject of discussion during Monarez&#8217;s hearing. This year, two states, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fluoride-in-water-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Utah<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/ron-desantis-fluoride-ban-florida-water-2nd-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Florida<\/a><\/span>, became the first to ban the use of fluoride in drinking water, where it&#8217;s been added for decades to help prevent tooth decay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fluoride is an important component to oral health, and there are various aspects of using fluoride to improve oral health \u2014 a direct application can be very valuable,&#8221; Monarez said.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Sen. Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland specifically asked Monarez whether the water in Potomac, Maryland, which has fluoridation, is safe for families.<\/p>\n<p>Monarez replied: &#8220;I believe the water in Potomac, Maryland is safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Monarez on RFK Jr. and the measles outbreak\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Measles came up repeatedly as senators questioned Monarez about how she would interact with Kennedy in her role at the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The CDC director can&#8217;t perform this critical role unless they are politically independent. Which means that you must be willing to disagree with political leaders based on scientific evidence,&#8221; Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire said. &#8220;So, is there anything that you disagree with Secretary Kennedy about?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I&#8217;m confirmed as CDC director, I look forward to having technical discussions with the secretary.
