It also lowered its expectations for operating profit growth to 10%-16%, down from 16%-24% in May.<\/p>\n<p>The updated outlook &#8220;reflects the persistent use of compounded GLP-1s, slower-than-expected market expansion and competition,&#8221; the company said. Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists (GLP-1s), a class of drugs used to manage diabetes,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-medicaid-glp-1-weight-loss-drugs-obesity-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have upended<\/a><\/span> the weight-loss industry.<\/p>\n<p>The Danish pharmaceutical company also announced on Tuesday the appointment of Maziar Mike Doustdar as president and CEO. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novonordisk.com\/about\/executive-management\/maziar-mike-doustdar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Doustdar<\/a>, who has worked at Novo Nordisk for over 30 years, will take the helm starting on Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p>Doustdar will succeed Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen, who announced his departure as CEO of Novo Nordisk in May, following a steep decline in the company&#8217;s share price, which has dropped nearly 37% since the start of this year.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reached for comment, a Novo Nordisk spokesperson said they did not have anything additional to share before the company&#8217;s earnings call, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 6.<\/p>\n<h2>Copycat drugs pervade market<\/h2>\n<p>While global sales of Wegovy are growing, sales of the weight-loss drug are expected to weaken in certain markets due to increased competition from <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/novo-nordisk-hims-hers-wegovy-weight-loss-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">compounded versions<\/a><\/span> of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>Compounded weight-loss drugs have the same active ingredients as Wegovy and other popular brands such as Ozempic, and are used as substitutes when the name-brand drugs aren&#8217;t available. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April said there is no longer a shortage of GLP-1s and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ordered<\/a> compounding pharmacies to stop selling their copycat versions of the popular weight-loss drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">efforts<\/a> to stymie them, however, compounded versions of the drugs continue to penetrate the market, giving consumers a cheaper option to name-brands like Wegovy, which can cost more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/medical-answers\/what-cost-wegovy-3579864\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$1000<\/a> per package for those without insurance.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Novo Nordisk <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/novo-nordisk-hims-hers-wegovy-weight-loss-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ended its partnership<\/a><\/span> with Hims &amp; Hers Health over claims that the online drug retailer was selling fake versions of Wegovy, a move Novo Nordisk\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/novo-nordisk-terminates-collaboration-with-hims--hers-health-inc-due-to-concerns-about-their-illegal-mass-compounding-and-deceptive-marketing-302488189.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> &#8220;put patient safety at risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBS News medical contributor Dr. C\u00e9line Gounder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TwmGo0KzMwI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told CBS News<\/a> last year that there is not a lot of oversight over the compounded drug market, and that there is a wide range when it comes to the quality and risk associated with each drug.<\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk said it is pursuing multiple avenues to &#8220;protect patients from knockoff &#8216;semaglutide&#8217; drugs&#8221; including litigation.
