Along with imposing tariffs and import restrictions, the country said, it had launched an antitrust investigation into Google.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The announcement of the investigation was vague \u2014 just one line on a Chinese agency\u2019s website. But it thrust Google, whose search engine is unavailable in China, into the middle of a geopolitical dispute and added to the company\u2019s long list of regulatory headaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A Google spokesman declined to comment on the Chinese government\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google has the world\u2019s most widely used search engine, and also leads the market for digital advertising. The company has faced antitrust investigations around the world, including in the United States, Canada, Europe and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While it\u2019s still unclear how China\u2019s antimonopoly investigation will develop, it could affect Google\u2019s dealings with Chinese companies. Here\u2019s more about the company\u2019s limited operations there:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-357b413c\">What did China announce?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">China\u2019s antitrust authority, the State Administration for Market Regulation, said it planned to investigate Google. The authority accused Google of violating an antimonopoly law without providing any additional details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The same body has been investigating Nvidia, the American chip-making giant, on antitrust grounds since December.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3960f6c2\">Isn\u2019t Google banned in China?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google\u2019s core products are unavailable in China because of the country\u2019s censorship restrictions. The company\u2019s search engine, video platform YouTube and Play Store for apps are all unavailable in the country.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-608b34a4\">Does Google operate in China?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google said it maintains a limited presence in China, with most of its activity focused on helping Chinese companies connect with customers and audiences outside of the country. This includes providing Android, its mobile operating system, to Chinese phone makers like Lenovo, Xiaomi and Vivo. Android code is open source, so phone makers can use it at no cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Silicon Valley company also lets Chinese companies advertise on Google and YouTube outside of China. Temu, the international arm of the Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/06\/business\/google-meta-temu-shein.html\" title=\"\">has flooded Google with ads for inexpensive goods<\/a> to gain more customers in the United States. Shein, a Chinese clothing company, also advertises on Google services outside of China.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-437f68b6\">How has Google\u2019s relationship with China evolved?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google has a difficult history in China. The company pulled its search engine out of China in 2010 because of government censorship and what the company said was a cyberattack from Chinese hackers trying to gain access to human rights activists\u2019 email accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sergey Brin, Google\u2019s co-founder, said at the time that the company <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/22\/interview-sergey-brin-on-googles-china-gambit\/\" title=\"\">objected to China\u2019s \u201ctotalitarian\u201d policies<\/a> when it came to censorship, political speech and internet communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But as China\u2019s internet grew, Google was tempted to jump back in. In 2018, the company was developing a search app for China called Dragonfly, which would have censored information that was banned by the Chinese government. The project prompted outrage among Google employees and in 2019, the company said it stopped the effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google also opened a center for artificial intelligence in China in 2017, saying <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/around-the-globe\/google-asia\/google-ai-china-center\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe science of A.I. has no borders.\u201d<\/a> Two years later, the company shut the center and emphasized that it was no longer conducting A.I. research in
