In late December, around <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklydeaths_select_00\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">600 people were dying each week<\/a>. Last winter at that time, it was around 2,000. (During the Omicron surge at the end of 2021, weekly deaths were topping 10,000.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Although wastewater levels can\u2019t tell us how many individual cases of Covid there are, the recent data reflects a significant lull in the virus\u2019s five-year assault.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is definitely the mildest Covid winter,\u201d said Michael Mina, an epidemiologist and chief science officer for eMed. \u201cIn terms of hospitalizations, in terms of spread.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-3e83ea4c\"><span>A new low<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One possible reason for the lull is that the population is still carrying some immunity from a large, later-than-usual summer surge, said Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. This year\u2019s vaccine was also a good match for the circulating variant, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covidvaxview\/weekly-dashboard\/adult-vaccination-coverage.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more people got it<\/a> this year than last, according to C.D.C. data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The virus also didn\u2019t acquire the kind of mutations after the summer wave that would have allowed for significantly faster transmission or greater sickness, epidemiologists said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s not unexpected several years into a new virus, said Aubree Gordon, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou have two or three years of it being really bad,\u201d she said. \u201cUsually the first year is the worst \u2014 as far as incidence rates and severity goes \u2014 and then it settles out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Epidemiologists don\u2019t know yet what a \u201cbaseline\u201d Covid wave will look like, and there\u2019s no guarantee that each winter will be milder than the last. But the chances of a new variant that can cause significant harm are much lower now, Mr. Mina said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShould we expect the variants to start to decline, in terms of how quickly they\u2019re rising, and how aggressively?\u201d he said. \u201cThe short answer is yes. The virus has grown up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Americans\u2019 immune systems have become very familiar with the virus, said Mr. Mina, through vaccination and prior infections, and on average are more capable of recognizing and attacking it. That means we might have a lower viral load when we become ill, he said, or clear the virus faster, getting less sick and infecting fewer people in the process. Fewer infections also give the virus fewer opportunities to mutate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2ad3fa3a\"><span>Still other ways to get sick<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That said, if it feels as if almost everyone you know has gotten sick this winter (or still is), you\u2019re not wrong: It\u2019s been another tough season for other respiratory viruses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At its peak, the weekly flu hospitalization rate this year surpassed last winter\u2019s high rate; hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus (R.S.V.) have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rsv\/php\/surveillance\/rsv-net.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">similarly mirrored<\/a> last year. (Norovirus, though not respiratory, is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/30\/well\/norovirus-symptoms-outbreak.html\" title=\"\">also notably high this year<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Flu and Covid have had roughly the same death toll so far this season \u2014 around 8,000 to 9,000 people as of mid-January, according to C.D.C. estimates. Covid deaths since the start of last summer have totaled around 25,000. (Though getting one virus <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20230210-can-you-get-two-viruses-at-the-same-time\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">can theoretically lower an individual\u2019s risk of getting another<\/a> for a short time, it\u2019s still very possible for multiple viruses to surge at once.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The comparison with flu is useful because, like flu, Covid is here to stay. As with flu, there\u2019ll be better and worse seasons. It might turn out that this winter was on the low side of our new baseline, Professor Gordon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But unlike with flu, there will probably be more waves outside of winter. While the timing of Covid\u2019s winter surge has been relatively consistent \u2014 peaking in early January each year \u2014 its other waves have yet to fall into a clear pattern. A mild surge during the winter holidays could mean a worse one later this year, possibly even later this winter. And for people who are at higher risk, that will continue to translate into severe illness and death, as well as new cases of long Covid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere might be some good times, some bad times,\u201d Dr. Chin-Hong said. \u201cSo whether or not we\u2019ll get something later on?
