The virus was officially\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-still-poses-threat-to-us-more-than-decade-after-its-elimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">declared eliminated<\/a><\/span> in the U.S. in 2000, after high rates of vaccination succeeded at halting nearly all domestic spread.<\/p>\n<h2>Maps show measles cases across U.S., Texas<\/h2>\n<p>The largest share of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-us-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">this year&#8217;s infections<\/a><\/span> are connected to an outbreak in West Texas that led to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-death-texas-outbreak\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the deaths<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/texas-measles-outbreak-second-child-death-unvaccinated\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">two children<\/a><\/span>. The number of cases in Texas alone has grown to more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/news-alerts\/measles-outbreak-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">750<\/a>. A person can be contagious for several days before they develop the rash that often accompanies measles, the CDC says. The virus spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks or even just breathes, and it can continue to infect others in the area for up to two hours after the infected person leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Measles is primarily a respiratory virus, and in some cases it can cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/signs-symptoms\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/symptoms\/complications.html#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">severe infections<\/a>\u00a0in the lungs and brain that can lead to cognitive issues, deafness or death. But\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-texas-preventable-symptoms\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the vaccine<\/a><\/span>, which is normally given as part of the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, is\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-measles-outbreak-what-to-know\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">safe and highly effective<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at preventing it, doctors and health experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Before the first measles vaccine became available in the 1960s, between 400 and 500 Americans \u2014 mostly children \u2014\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-many-lives-vaccines-have-saved\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">died every year from measles<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:453px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-Xf256\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Xf256\/full.png\" alt=\"Line chart showing the number of measles cases in the U.S. from 1939 to present.\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Xf256\/4\/\">  <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>Health experts point to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/vaccination-rate-decline-measles-polio-outbreaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">lower vaccination rates<\/a><\/span>\u00a0as a reason for the increase in measles. Nationwide, a recent study found the\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-vaccination-rates-us-counties-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">MMR vaccination rate decreased<\/a><\/span> from 93.92% in the 2017-2018 school year to 91.26% in the 2023-2024 school year, looking at county-level data in 33 states. A 95% vaccination rate is needed for herd immunity, which prevents outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas outbreak was originally centered in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-outbreak-texas-rfk-vaccines-8cf4641b04731c713edb524ca943490c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rural Mennonite community<\/a> with a lower vaccination rate, and most of those affected have been\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/vaccination-rate-decline-measles-polio-outbreaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">children and teenagers<\/a><\/span>, nearly all of whom were\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-texas-preventable-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">unvaccinated<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or had an unknown vaccination status. State and local health officials confirmed the first patient who died was an unvaccinated school-aged child, and the second was an unvaccinated 8-year-old girl. Neither of the children had underlying health conditions, the Texas health department said. The death of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-new-mexico-death-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">one adult<\/a><\/span> in New Mexico was also linked to measles.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:226px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-qOFbx\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/qOFbx\/full.png\" alt=\"Stacked bar chart showing the percentage of current cases that are unvaccinated\/unknown or had atleast one dose of the MMR vaccine.\"\/><\/div>\n<p> <amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/qOFbx\/9\/\">  <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Measles symptoms\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-measles-mmr-vaccine-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Initial measles symptoms<\/a><\/span> include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a characteristic rash that begins to develop a few days later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While most people&#8217;s symptoms improve, about 1 in 5 unvaccinated people who get measles will be hospitalized. About 1 out of every 1,000 children with measles will develop brain swelling that can lead to brain damage, and up to 3 of every 1,000 children who become infected will die, the CDC says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is no antiviral drug or treatment that can cure measles, but medical care can help relieve symptoms.
