He was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy later revealed he had died from stab wounds. It was Oct. 18, 2019, and Melissa initially told detectives that the couple had been drinking the night before, but that she could remember few details. However, when investigators found a security camera above a neighbor&#8217;s garage door that held clues to what happened, her story changed. Prosecutors say Melissa can be heard screaming at Matthew on an audio recording from the camera. She said she stabbed her fianc\u00e9, acting in self-defense when he tried to choke her. Melissa Turner was eventually arrested and charged with second degree murder with a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought this was it. I thought he was going to kill me. And I stabbed him lightly in the back just to get him off me,&#8221; Turner told Moriarty. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t do what they&#8217;re saying I did. If I&#8217;m going to prison, then I&#8217;m going down fighting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>THE DAY MATTHEW TRUSSLER DIED<\/h2>\n<p><em>911 OPERATOR: Hillsborough County Fire and Rescue. What&#8217;s the address of the emergency?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>MELISSA TURNER: Please \u2014<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>911 OPERATOR: Tell me what&#8217;s wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>MELISSA TURNER: He is nonresponsive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: I couldn&#8217;t stop crying.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Turner can vividly describe the moment as medics tried to revive her fianc\u00e9, Matthew Trussler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: I watched the EMTs unfold the sheet and, um, lay the white sheet over him.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, Melissa still struggles to talk about the day Matthew died.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: And it was \u2014 it was when that happened that I couldn&#8217;t hold in the tears and everything.<\/p>\n<p>It was around 8:30 a.m. when Melissa says she found Matthew unresponsive on the back patio of the house they shared in a suburb of Tampa, Florida.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: I tried to see if he was breathing. And I tried to \u2014 to start CPR.<\/p>\n<p>Just a couple hours later, still covered in blood, Melissa agreed to talk to the investigators at the Hillsborough County Sheriff&#8217;s Office. She says she wanted to help them figure out what had happened to Matthew.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: I was just saying &#8220;yes&#8221; and complying with whatever was kind of said or told to me. \u2026 the world around me didn&#8217;t really feel real in those moments.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER (interrogation): This is a lot less glamorous than they make it on TV.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa told the detectives the couple&#8217;s day had started off just like any other. They took care of their pets, did house chores as seen in previously posted Facebook videos and went grocery shopping. She admitted they were also drinking alcohol throughout the day leading into the evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER (interrogation): I mean, that&#8217;s what we do. We had just, we were there at the house ourselves \u2026 We had drinks. He always liked drinking. He was a drinker.<\/p>\n<p>According to Melissa, around 11 p.m. she got tired and told Matthew she wanted to go to sleep. They are hard to see, but she is wearing latex gloves given to her by an officer at the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Defense Attorney John Trevena<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Melissa is wearing latex gloves given to her by an officer at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: He had you put them on because of the amount of blood.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I was getting things bloody cause I was covered in his blood. <\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE 2: Do you want to keep wearing those gloves, or do you wanna take them off?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I&#8217;ll leave them on for now.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: Do you have any injuries on your person? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: No (cries).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: Any scratches or cuts or anything? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Not that I&#8217;ve noticed (cries).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The detectives eventually told Melissa she would need to take the gloves off so they could take photographs of her.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER (points to her right palm): I have a little cut right here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: And that&#8217;s from what?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I think it&#8217;s from grabbing the glass? Or \u2014 cause there \u2014 I know there was the broken glass this morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>POLICE PHOTOGRAPHER: Open your hands a little more there. \u2026 Did that hurt to open it up? Sorry. <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Oh my gosh, I didn&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: That one&#8217;s sliced pretty good. <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I didn&#8217;t even notice. <\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: Oh, wow.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I had no idea that was there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As detectives worked to get to the bottom of what happened, Matthew&#8217;s family was learning Matthew had died. His brother Sean Trussler got the call from their mother.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><strong>Sean Trussler<\/strong>: I got a call that he died in an accident is what they told me. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sean called his fianc\u00e9e Jennifer immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Giles<\/strong>: He&#8217;s sobbing so hard and just screaming at the top of his lungs, &#8220;He&#8217;s gone. My brother, Mattie. Mattie&#8217;s gone. He&#8217;s dead.&#8221; \u2026 I&#8217;m getting chills just talkin&#8217; about this.<\/p>\n<p>Sean and Matthew Trussler were originally from Massachusetts. In 2015, Matthew followed in his brother&#8217;s footsteps and moved to Florida to work with him in the construction business. Sean, who lost one of his eyes due to a work accident shortly after his brother&#8217;s death, says the two made a good team. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sean Trussler<\/strong>: I have worked Mattie very hard. \u2026 He just needed to be led correctly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Matthew, or Mattie as Sean calls him, struggled with substance abuse and was looking at the move to Florida as a chance to start over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sean Trussler<\/strong>: He was a really good kid. \u2026 He worked so hard. He had the biggest heart. I mean, we might have got in argument. But it didn&#8217;t seem like anything \u2026 We weren&#8217;t, like, screaming at each other that I know of.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: You told us that you guys were there. It was only the two of you. The two of you were drinking \u2026 my problem is, is I got Matthew on the back porch with stab wounds. <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Stab wounds?<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another detective, Ryan LaGasse, was knocking on doors and canvassing the neighborhood for clues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan LaGasse<\/strong>: As I walked over here, you&#8217;ve got \u2026 the camera located directly above the residence \u2026 across the street here. <\/p>\n<p>And what was captured by the home security camera, police say, would prove Melissa knew more than she was letting on. <\/p>\n<p><em>MELISSA TURNER (neighbor&#8217;s security camera audio): Get up now! Get up! Get up! I hate you!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>DIGITAL OBSERVERS<\/h2>\n<p>An eyewitness can be crucial to solving a crime, and just hours into the investigation of Matthew Trussler&#8217;s death, detectives discovered digital observers. You know, things that were \u2014 sounded like they were crashing. And, um, so then, I kinda zoomed in my senses a little bit \u2026 And then, from there I started hearing voices \u2026 and then I hear what sounds like screaming, um, yelling.<\/p>\n<p>LaGasse says those voices were coming from Matthew and Melissa&#8217;s house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: How would you describe the tone of the voices that you heard?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan LaGasse<\/strong>: So, the little bit of male voice \u2026 was tough to distinguish. But the female voice was very, um, very loud. Sounded very angry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: What could you hear? What kind of phrases?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan LaGasse<\/strong>: So, I heard \u2014&#8221;Get up.&#8221;\u00a0 I heard \u2014 &#8220;So&#8221; and then there was an explicit &#8220;die.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: You heard, &#8220;So die&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p><em>MELISSA TURNER (neighbor&#8217;s security camera audio): &#8220;Go f***ing die!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan LaGasse<\/strong>:\u00a0 And then I heard \u2014 you know, it sounded like \u2026 a female voice was crying, saying, &#8220;What \u2014 what did I do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LaGasse immediately reached out to his colleagues, who were interviewing Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: You said that last night you never woke up at all.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: No. \u2026 I remember laying down. I remember waking up in the same spot.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators now believed they had evidence that Melissa wasn&#8217;t telling all she knew.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: Tell me about what happened around 4 o&#8217;clock this morning.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: 4 o&#8217;clock? What happened at 4 o&#8217;clock?<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: I don&#8217;t know. That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m asking you.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I don&#8217;t know either. Why?<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: Was there any arguing \u2014<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: At 4 o&#8217;clock?<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: \u2014 4 o&#8217;clock this morning? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Not that I know of.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I believe I was asleep. \u2026 I have no memory of any argument at 4 o&#8217;clock in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>But after detectives confronted her with the evidence, Melissa&#8217;s story changed.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: I have some video surveillance \u2026 actually, yelling and screaming between a male and a female coming from your house.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE 2: What we need from you that would probably \u2026 make a lot more sense is to \u2026 tell us what that argument was about.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I would say he woke me up and we got in an argument over that. Because he was still up at four in the morning drinking. <\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE 2: OK. So, just so I&#8217;m clear, you do have memory of what happened, right? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Yes. <\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: At 4 o&#8217;clock.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: Why were you yellin&#8217; at him, &#8220;Bitch, get up. Bitch, get up&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: \u2026 actually, a lot of the times whenever he&#8217;s drinking and gets that drunk into the hours of the morning \u2014 he will just fall over.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: You also said a couple of other things like, &#8220;Stay down. So f***ing die.&#8221; what are you talking about?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: That was me being pissed off at him that he fell over.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: You got a slice on your hand \u2014 a slice. That&#8217;s what that is. How did that happen?<\/p>\n<p>The investigators again focused on that cut on Melissa&#8217;s hand.<\/p>\n<p>DETECTIVE: It&#8217;s not from glass. I can tell you that.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, her story changed.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: He does get his knives out sometimes. \u2026 He wasn&#8217;t him anymore. \u2026 thinking back on it, this is from me grabbing a knife out of his hand. \u2026 And things got escalated from there.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa later told &#8220;48 Hours&#8221; she wasn&#8217;t trying to hide the injury on her hand. Back then, Melissa was running a popular fitness blog after losing 100 pounds, later documenting her transformation on social media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Walega<\/strong>: \u2026 it kept her accountable \u2026 she had this audience that was incredibly invested in what she was doing \u2026 watching her evolve as a person.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Cameron and Melissa moved to Florida to pursue careers in special effects. There, Melissa confessed to Cameron that she had started a second blog with racier content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Walega<\/strong>: \u2026 this was meant to be temporary. This was supplemental. <\/p>\n<p>But Cameron says Melissa soon began earning a decent living doing what is called cam work, where she performed \u2014 in various stage of dress \u2014 for her internet followers who paid a fee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Walega<\/strong>: She was so proud of where she got herself \u2026 &#8220;I used to be this incredibly insecure girl. And it was money, money, money \u2026 And the more and more success that she found, the more and more unstable she became.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Walega<\/strong>: She would scream at times that it would pierce your ear. \u2026 There were times where she was just unpredictable. Absolutely unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>Sean and Jennifer now wonder if Melissa&#8217;s volatility may have escalated an argument with Matthew on the night he died. Did he want out of the adult entertainment business?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sean Trussler<\/strong>: I think maybe that night he was like &#8220;Yo, I&#8217;m done with this. I&#8217;m washin&#8217; my hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Giles<\/strong>: She didn&#8217;t like whatever he said to her. She was angry from being woken up and they began to argue. Melissa said Matthew was holding a knife and she tried to grab it and things escalated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Defense Attorney John Trevena<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: Matt \u2026 had his knife out. It was the black \u2014 tactical switchblade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: There were times where he would get really upset and he would try and use it on himself. \u2026 and, so, it was a common thing for me to try and take a knife away from him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: On this night \u2026 He didn&#8217;t want to let go of the knife.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa says Matthew was drunk and despondent. They struggled over the knife, she says, but after she managed to take it away, she says Matthew grabbed her by the neck and squeezed \u2014 a detail she failed to tell detectives during her interrogation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner <\/strong>(cries): I thought this was it. I thought he was going to kill me. \u2026 And then I stabbed him lightly in the back just to get him off me.<\/p>\n<p>She says after she stabbed him once in the back, Matthew pushed her into the kitchen counter, and she hit her head. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: \u2026 he came at me. But that was it. I just remember passing out\u2014blacking out there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: She&#8217;s the real victim \u2026 She&#8217;s the one that was suffering the abuse.<\/p>\n<p>John Trevena is Melissa&#8217;s attorney. He describes the couple&#8217;s relationship as toxic. <\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: \u2026 particularly since she said it was escalating. \u2026 His drinking was escalating, his behavior issues were escalating \u2026 And it just unfortunately escalated into this very odd incident.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: I don&#8217;t think it is a murder case. I think it is a case of \u2014 self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>But Melissa&#8217;s version of events will be picked apart by prosecutors Katherine Fand and Chinwe Fossett at her trial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katherine Fand<\/strong>: There&#8217;s just nothing to support her statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: She never mentions anything about anyone strangling her or anything, until days before trial \u2026 you really have to take that into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the audio from the neighbor&#8217;s security camera, the state plans to present video from inside the couple&#8217;s home. Remember that ADT security footage recovered by investigators? Prosecutors believed it didn&#8217;t show any suspicious activity the night of Matthew&#8217;s death. But just before the trial, they discovered they misread the time and date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katherine Fand<\/strong>: I&#8217;ll be honest, I misunderstood the timing. It&#8217;s not recorded in Eastern Standard Time. It is recorded in Universal Time.<\/p>\n<p>And what the video did capture, say prosecutors, would undermine Melissa&#8217;s defense.<\/p>\n<p>KATHERINE FAND (closing arguments) We&#8217;re gonna show you some ADT videos. \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>KATHERINE FAND (closing arguments): He&#8217;s calmly walking \u2026 and you can see, she&#8217;s hunched over, she&#8217;s yelling. \u2026 She is angry and upset.<\/p>\n<h2>MELISSA TURNER TAKES THE STAND<\/h2>\n<p>On Valentine&#8217;s Day 2022, two years after Matthew Trussler was found dead on his patio, his fianc\u00e9e Melissa Turner went on trial for murder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Melissa had been out on bail since her arrest in 2019. Prosecutor Chinwe Fossett sees it differently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: I did think that the jury should&#8217;ve known that she was an actress. \u2026 And she was able to make herself into this victim-type person, and then cry on demand. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Melissa&#8217;s attorney, John Trevena, told the jury that she didn&#8217;t mean to kill Matthew. That she stabbed him in self-defense during that struggle over the knife.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>JOHN TREVENA (in court): Who killed Matthew Trussler? Matthew Trussler killed Matthew Trussler.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: He did. He did it to himself because of his actions and his behaviors. \u2026 His drinking, his emotional abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: You&#8217;re saying that Melissa had the right to kill him because he was drunk?<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: No. \u2026 Melissa had the right to kill him to defend herself from being strangled.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Prosecutor Fosset says Matthew had no record or history of violence against anyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: Why do you believe that Melissa killed Matthew Trussler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: I think she was intoxicated, and I do think that she went far beyond anything she thought she would do. \u2026 Maybe she was just so frustrated with his drinking. \u2026 that she harms him so badly that he ends up dying. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At trial, Melissa decided to take a risk and testify. She described Matthew as an alcoholic who had exhibited abusive and unsettling behaviors in the past<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER (in court): There were times where he would push me \u2026 and punch the walls beside my head.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER (in court): I had seen him cut himself, burn himself, stab himself.<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER (in court): He would stare off at some corner \u2026 And he would tell me that &#8220;there&#8217;s a demon standing right there.&#8221; \u2026 There were times where \u2026 he would talk in a different voice (cries). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>JOHN TREVENA: Did that frighten you?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: God, yes. The fatal injury was not the stab wound to his back, but from a deep incision on his right arm, which punctured a vein.<\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT (in court): You stabbed him in the back, correct? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Correct.<\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT: OK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: The only thing that I did was the back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: How did he get cut on his right arm?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: I \u2014 I couldn&#8217;t tell you that. I have no clue. He could&#8217;ve fallen into something; he could&#8217;ve done it himself. \u2026 And I stabbed him once to get him off of me from strangling me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: Why didn&#8217;t you tell the police that he had been trying to strangle you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Turner<\/strong>: \u2026 because I couldn&#8217;t remember at the time. \u2026 I had complained multiple times about a headache. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Fossett questioned Melissa about her memories that returned before the trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT (in court): And so today, in 2022, you now claim you had some kind of head injury, correct? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Umm, yes.<\/p>\n<p>But a crime scene tech testified there was no evidence of head injury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT: And now in 2022, you speak of some kind of blackout, correct? Yes? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Correct. <\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSET: OK.<\/p>\n<p>The jury won&#8217;t have to rely just on Melissa&#8217;s memories as they weigh the evidence. There&#8217;s also that video from inside the couple&#8217;s home. Prosecutors say it proves Melissa was the aggressor that night. At 3:38 a.m., Melissa is seen running towards her office. Prosecutors say she could have left then for help or called 911.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: That&#8217;s not what she did. She \u2026 walks back to \u2026where he is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katherine Fand<\/strong>: She is not in reasonable fear of him. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s clear. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Melissa&#8217;s attorney John Trevena rejects the state&#8217;s timeline and disputes what prosecutors say is seen on that video.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: I never saw any cut on her hand, and I don&#8217;t think it shows that.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting continues, say prosecutors, because around 4:30 a.m., they say the couple moved close to an open window and that security camera across the street recorded a woman&#8217;s angry voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>MELISSA TURNER (neighbor&#8217;s security camera audio): &#8220;You have the power to do something, so ****ing die.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT (in court): You said, 4:33 a.m., &#8220;So f***ing die.&#8221; Right?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: No. \u2026 I have no recollection of that. \u2026 I explained my side and why I did what I did (cries). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT: You&#8217;re crying right now. Is that, is that what&#8217;s happening? Are you crying right now? <\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: Do you know what tears look like? <\/p>\n<p>CHINWE FOSSETT: Are you crying because you can just cry on cue?<\/p>\n<p>MELISSA TURNER: I&#8217;m crying because, because my life is on the line right now.<\/p>\n<p>Trevena says it&#8217;s impossible to clearly understand what Melissa is saying on the neighbor&#8217;s security camera recording. But when he decided to flee from her he \u2026 pushed out the screen and went out the window.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors say by the time Matthew collapsed by the pool, Melissa would have seen how injured he was.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katherine Fand<\/strong>: He has already bled all that blood in the kitchen and then gone out. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: She knows that he needs help. And she&#8217;s awake and she doesn&#8217;t help him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Melissa says that&#8217;s when she returned to her office and blacked out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: The argument ends sometime around 5 o&#8217;clock. It&#8217;s this drunken fight and somebody ends up bleeding to death. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: That&#8217;s a homicide.<\/p>\n<p>And Prosecutor Chinwe Fossett says this case is really about domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinwe Fossett<\/strong>: He was cut and stabbed and left to die. I think that&#8217;s the very definition, especially considering that this was by his fianc\u00e9e. <\/p>\n<p>In Florida, second-degree murder cases are heard by six jurors. In this case, two women and four men \u2014 one of them, Donald Goodwin. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: You see a young lady and you&#8217;re already, like, your stomach drops. You&#8217;re like, Lord, just let me do the right thing &#8230; But behind the looks of a young lady, the truth was coming out quickly. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: When she went to the stand, I think it hurt her, big time. \u2026 her tears were so fake. But I couldn&#8217;t use it as evidence because the camera wasn&#8217;t crystal clear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: At that point, did you think he had already been stabbed? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: And I think she snapped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: You don&#8217;t believe he was strangling her at the time?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: No. \u2026 I felt like she had enough \u2026 and attacked him.<\/p>\n<p>And there was one clip of the audio recording that convinced Goodwin Melissa knew Matthew was hurt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: \u2026 then she said \u2026 &#8220;What did I do?&#8221; And I was, like, that right there tells me you know exactly what&#8217;s going on now. \u2026 she knew he was gonna die, she knew it, and yet, she called nobody. <\/p>\n<p>And as for Melissa&#8217;s claims about hitting her head and blacking out?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Moriarty<\/strong>: You don&#8217;t believe that she might&#8217;ve passed out?\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Goodwin<\/strong>: No. Not at all. \u2026 there was no evidence of head injury.<\/p>\n<p>The jury deliberated for seven hours.<\/p>\n<p>COURT CLERK: We the jury find as follows as to the charge \u2026 the defendant is guilty of murder in the second degree.<\/p>\n<p>Guilty of the murder of Matthew Trussler.<\/p>\n<p>JENNIFER GILES: I remember Sean squeezing my hand, it was a happy feeling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Trevena<\/strong>: She was inconsolable.
