{"id":36261,"date":"2025-07-03T15:48:36","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T15:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/man-dies-after-being-bitten-by-bat-carrying-extremely-rare-infection-in-australia\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T15:48:36","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T15:48:36","slug":"man-dies-after-being-bitten-by-bat-carrying-extremely-rare-infection-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/man-dies-after-being-bitten-by-bat-carrying-extremely-rare-infection-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Man dies after being bitten by bat carrying &#8220;extremely rare&#8221; infection in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>An Australian man has died from an &#8220;extremely rare&#8221; rabies-like infection transmitted by a bat bite, health officials said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The man in his 50s was bitten by a bat carrying Australian bat lyssavirus several months ago, the health service in New South Wales said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.nsw.gov.au\/news\/Pages\/20250702_01.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While it is extremely rare to see a case of Australian bat lyssavirus, there is no effective treatment for it,&#8221; Keira Glasgow, a director in health protection at NSW Health said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Glasgow said there were 118 people who required medical assistance after being bitten or scratched by bats in 2024, but this is the first confirmed case of the virus in New South Wales, and the fourth case in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The man from northern New South Wales, who has not been identified, was this week listed as being in a &#8220;critical condition&#8221; in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said he was treated following the bite and they were investigating to see whether other exposures or factors played a role in his illness.<\/p>\n<p>The virus \u2014 a close relative to rabies, which does not exist in Australia \u2014 is transmitted when bat saliva enters the human body through a bite or scratch.<\/p>\n<p>First symptoms can take days or years to appear.<\/p>\n<p>Early signs of the disease are flu-like \u2014 a headache, fever and fatigue, the health service said. The victim&#8217;s condition rapidly deteriorates, leading to paralysis, delirium, convulsions and death.<\/p>\n<p>There were only three previous cases of human infection by Australian bat lyssavirus since it was first identified in 1996 \u2014 all of them fatal.<\/p>\n<h2>Infection is &#8220;very closely related to rabies&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>People should avoid touching or handling bats, as any bat in Australia could carry lyssavirus, the New South Wales health service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.nsw.gov.au\/news\/Pages\/20250702_01.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only wildlife handlers who are trained, protected, and vaccinated should interact with the flying mammals, it warned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you or someone you know is bitten or scratched by a bat, you need to wash the wound thoroughly for 15 minutes right away with soap and water and apply an antiseptic with anti-virus action,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Patients then require treatment with rabies immunoglobulin and rabies vaccine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The virus has been found in species of flying foxes and insect-eating microbats, NSW Health said.<\/p>\n<p>The species of bat involved in the latest fatality has not been identified.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Australian bat lyssavirus is very closely related to rabies and will cause death in susceptible people if they become infected and are not treated quickly,&#8221; said James Gilkerson, infectious diseases expert at the University of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>The virus was first identified in May 1996 by scientists at the national science agency CSIRO, who examined brain tissue from a flying fox that had been showing &#8220;nervous signs&#8221; in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, a bat handler in Queensland became ill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The initial numbness and weakness suffered in her arm progressed to coma and death,&#8221; the science agency said in an online document on the virus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Two further cases in Queensland \u2014 a woman in 1998 and an eight year old boy in 2013 \u2014 resulted in death after being bitten or scratched by a bat,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>There are subtle differences between the lyssavirus in flying foxes and insectivorous bats, the science agency has found.<\/p>\n<p>Infected bats can transmit the virus to people, other bats and other mammals.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, at least three people died in North America after being bitten or exposed to a bat. In November, a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-teacher-dies-bitten-bat-classroom\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">California teacher died<\/a><\/span> after she was bitten by a bat that presumably had rabies inside her classroom.<\/p>\n<p>In October, health officials in Canada announced that a\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/child-dies-bat-rabies-canada\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">child died from rabies<\/a><\/span>\u00a0after being exposed to a bat in their room. <\/p>\n<p>About a week before that, officials announced a\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/minnesotan-dies-rabies-bat\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">U.S. citizen died<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from rabies after being exposed to a bat in western Minnesota in July.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\"
