{"id":36087,"date":"2025-07-02T16:33:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T16:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/certain-type-of-hormone-therapy-increases-breast-cancer-risk-study-finds\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T16:33:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T16:33:19","slug":"certain-type-of-hormone-therapy-increases-breast-cancer-risk-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/certain-type-of-hormone-therapy-increases-breast-cancer-risk-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Certain type of hormone therapy increases breast cancer risk, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Women using a certain type of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hormone-therapy-menopause-slow-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">hormone therapy<\/a><\/span> to treat menopause symptoms could be at higher risk for\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/breast-cancer-increase-reasons\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">breast cancer<\/a><\/span>, according to a new study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study, published Tuesday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS1470-2045(25)00211-6\/abstract?rss=yes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Lancet Oncology<\/a>, found that estrogen plus progesterone increases the risk of breast cancer in women under 55 with a uterus, while estrogen alone reduces the risk.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. C\u00e9line Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/study-finds-link-between-certain-types-of-hormone-therapy-and-higher-rates-of-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221; Wednesday<\/a> the study participants, all under age 55, were divided into two groups \u2014 women who still have their uterus and those who do not, since they require different types of treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, which may be done for a number of reasons, including abnormal vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, uterine fibroids, severe endometriosis and certain types of cancer. Approximately 600,000 females get hysterectomies in the U.S. each year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/procedures\/hysterectomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the women who do still have a uterus, you have to give estrogen plus progesterone together. Estrogen alone will cause a thickening of the uterine lining, which can cause a different kind of cancer, what we call <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/study-women-may-avoid-endometrial-cancer-with-exercise-weight-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">endometrial cancer<\/a><\/span>. So you have to give the combination,&#8221; Gounder said. &#8220;In women who no longer have a uterus, you can give estrogen alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And the difference in treatment mattered. &#8220;What they found is estrogen alone reduced the risk of breast cancer,&#8221; she said. &#8220;There seems to be a slight increase in risk in breast cancer if you also took progesterone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This research is a &#8220;great example of (how) science evolves,&#8221; Gounder added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It comes after an early 2000s study called the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/shifting-world-of-womens-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Women&#8217;s Health Initiative<\/a><\/span> that focused on older women who may not have started hormone replacement therapy until 10 or so years after going through <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/menopause-grown-woman-talk-obgyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">menopause<\/a><\/span>. The study, which raised safety concerns and led to a\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hormone-therapy-menopause-slow-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">longtime public misunderstanding<\/a><\/span> around hormone therapy, has since been found problematic in terms of how it was designed. Now healthcare professionals largely consider the treatment option safe and effective. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The newer research is focused on what actually happens in real life, which is women who go through menopause in their 40s or 50s, (and) start treatment around that age,&#8221; Gounder said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As with most medications, hormone replacement therapy comes with certain risks for some people. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/menopause\/in-depth\/hormone-therapy\/art-20046372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a> notes it can lead to increased risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clots and some cancers.
