And this all comes as <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/credit-card-balances-are-falling-heres-how-to-reduce-yours-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">credit card debt balances<\/a><\/span> have increased year-over-year, and the average <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/credit-card-interest-rates-surging-how-to-lower-yours-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">credit card interest rate<\/a><\/span> is hovering around a record high.<\/p>\n<p>Considering these economic factors, then, and the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/why-borrowers-shouldnt-wait-for-rate-cuts-to-fix-their-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">chances of any material financial relief<\/a><\/span> on the horizon, many credit card users may be contemplating requesting a card limit increase. After all, increasing your credit card limit could be the difference between being able to make ends meet and not. But it also could put you in a worse financial position than you&#8217;re in currently, making this an important consideration to get right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The answer, however, isn&#8217;t particularly clear. Here&#8217;s when you shouldn&#8217;t (and should) consider it in today&#8217;s unique economic landscape:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>When you shouldn&#8217;t ask for a credit card limit increase in today&#8217;s economy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re one of the average credit card holders right now, saddled with a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heres-how-much-credit-card-debt-the-average-american-has-and-how-to-pay-it-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">credit card debt<\/a><\/span> of $8,000 approximately, then you probably shouldn&#8217;t ask for a credit card limit increase. A credit card debt balance of this amount indicates an inability to manage your debt load appropriately.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, while that&#8217;s a red flag in any economic climate, it&#8217;s particularly troubling considering that the\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-are-credit-card-interest-charges-compounded\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">credit card debt compounds<\/a><\/span> daily for borrowers and, more importantly, that the average credit card interest rate is around 21% now, just under a record high of 23% that was reached last year. That&#8217;s more than $21 in interest for every $100 borrowed. So, even if you&#8217;re approved for a credit card limit increase (which may not be likely if you have this borrower profile), it&#8217;s likely not a good idea to pursue it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, consider evaluating the reasons why you got yourself into this situation to begin with \u2014 and look for ways to reduce what you owe cost-effectively and rapidly. There are multiple <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/important-debt-relief-options-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">debt relief options<\/a><\/span> available, ranging from <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-a-debt-management-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">debt management programs<\/a><\/span> to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-credit-counseling-can-and-cant-do-to-help-with-your-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">credit counseling<\/a><\/span> to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-credit-card-debt-forgiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">credit card debt forgiveness<\/a><\/span> (which you may <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/who-qualifies-for-credit-card-debt-forgiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">qualify<\/a><\/span> for if you have the average debt amount of $8,000 or more).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You won&#8217;t know which debt relief option works best for your situation, however, until you explore all your potential resources. Just don&#8217;t wait too much longer to act, either. It may have been easy (and quick) to accumulate this much debt, but <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-long-does-credit-card-debt-relief-take\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the process of paying it down will take time<\/a><\/span> and due diligence.
