solar flare released by the sun on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The solar flare peaked at 5:49 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, NASA&#8217;s Solar Dynamics Observatory said. It was an X-class flare \u2014 the most intense kind, NASA said. Solar flares are essentially &#8220;giant explosions on the sun&#8221; that send energy, light and high-speed particles into space, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/space-weather\/solar-flares\/what-is-a-solar-flare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An image captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the sun, colorized in teal to draw attention to the flare. The flare is visible as a bright flash at the center of the sun. Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids and navigation signals. They also can pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.<\/p>\n<p>Solar flares are also often associated with coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. CMEs are huge bubbles of coronal plasma that the sun occasionally ejects, NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/nmp\/st5\/SCIENCE\/cme.html#:~:text=Coronal%20mass%20ejections%20(CMEs)%20are,scientists%20call%20%22flux%20rope.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says online<\/a>. Often, CMEs look like &#8220;huge, twisted ropes,&#8221; NASA says, because they involve the sun&#8217;s magnetic fields. Coronal mass ejections can also disrupt radio and satellite communications, and can also cause geomagnetic storms on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2024, a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/more-geomagnetic-storms-remain-likely-monday-sun-continues-erupt-x-class-flares\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">powerful coronal mass ejection<\/a><\/span> brought the strongest <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-issued-unusual-solar-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">geomagnetic storm<\/a><\/span> in over 20 years to Earth. During the CME, multiple X-class solar flares <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/solar-cycle-largest-flare-bursts-not-over-may-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">were recorded<\/a><\/span>. The storm caused some radio blackouts.
