The Black Hawk helicopter was carrying a crew of three. Officials said early Thursday that everyone on board both aircraft is believed dead, which would make it the deadliest U.S. air crash in nearly a quarter century.<\/p>\n<p>At least 28 bodies had been recovered by 8 a.m., officials said, and the rescue effort had switched to a recovery mission.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t believe there are any survivors,&#8221; D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly told reporters Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/crash-reagan-national-airport-washington-dc\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">collision Wednesday<\/a><\/span> of the Bombardier CRJ-701 twin-engine plane and UH-60 Black Hawk occurred over the Potomac River and the two aircraft fell into the icy water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1982, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/special-reports\/dc-plane-crash\/potomac-river-plane-crash-rekindles-memories-air-florida-flight-90-tragedy-reagan-national-airport\/65-99ed257e-d6dd-4956-a8a8-bdb57eb317c9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Air Florida flight crashed<\/a> into the Potomac and killed 78.<\/p>\n<h2>When was the last deadly crash involving a U.S. passenger jet?<\/h2>\n<p>The deadliest recent crash was on Feb. 12, 2009 when a Colgan Air plane\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pilot-experience-eyed-in-flight-3407-probe\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed near Buffalo<\/a><\/span>, New York, killing everyone aboard the Bombardier DHC-8 propeller plane, including 45 passengers, two pilots and two flight attendants. Another person on the ground also died, bringing the total death toll to 50.<\/p>\n<p>The flight recorder revealed that just after the control tower lost contact with the plane, the crew talked of significant <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ntsb-crew-saw-ice-buildup-before-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ice buildup<\/a><\/span> on the windshield and the leading edge of the wing, despite the de-ice switch being on. Federal investigators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wivb.com\/news\/pilot-records-database-rolled-out-by-faa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">determined<\/a>\u00a0that the pilot&#8217;s response caused the plane to crash because of inflight errors.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the other deadliest commercial plane crashes in the U.S. since the Air Florida disaster, according to reports from the National Transportation Safety Board:<\/p>\n<h2>Aug. 27, 2006<\/h2>\n<p>A Comair aircraft <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/kentucky-plane-crash\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed when taking off<\/a><\/span> in Lexington, Kentucky, after it left from the wrong runway and ran off the end. Two crew members and 47 passengers were killed.<\/p>\n<h2>Nov. 12, 2001<\/h2>\n<p>Just after takeoff, an American Airlines flight en route to the Dominican Republic\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-city-remembers-victims-of-american-airlines-flight-587-crash-22-years-later\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed into a residential area<\/a><\/span> of Belle Harbor, in Queens, New York. All 260 people aboard the plane were killed.<\/p>\n<h2>Sept. 11, 2001<\/h2>\n<p>Nearly 3,000 people were killed as 19 al-Qaida hijackers seized control of four jetliners, sending two of the planes into New York&#8217;s World Trade Center, a third into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth into a field in western Pennsylvania. It remains the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/remembering-9-11\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">deadliest terror attack<\/a><\/span> in history.<\/p>\n<h2>Jan. 31, 2000<\/h2>\n<p>An Alaska Airlines flight <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/investigator-explains-alaska-air-crash\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed into the Pacific Ocean<\/a><\/span> near Anacapa Island, California. The crash killed 83 passengers and five crew members.<\/p>\n<h2>July 17, 1996<\/h2>\n<p>A Trans World Airlines flight <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/twa-flight-800-crash-inside-the-missile-theory\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed in the Atlantic Ocean<\/a><\/span> near East Moriches, New York, on its way to Paris, France. All 230 people on board were killed, and the airplane was destroyed.<\/p>\n<h2>May 11, 1996<\/h2>\n<p>A Valujet Airlines flight <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/25-years-later-remembrance-ceremony-valujet-crash-everglades\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed into the Everglades<\/a><\/span> about 10 minutes after takeoff from the Miami International Airport. The crash killed all 105 passengers and five crew members.<\/p>\n<h2>Oct. 31, 1994<\/h2>\n<p>An American Eagle flight in Roselawn, Indiana, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/history\/retroindy\/2014\/03\/13\/american-eagle-flight-4184\/6370425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">crashed<\/a>, killing 64 passengers and four crew members.<\/p>\n<h2>Sept. 8, 1994<\/h2>\n<p>A <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/us-air-flight-427-pittsburgh-hopewell-deadly-plane-crash-1994-30-years-later\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">USAir flight crashed<\/a><\/span> while attempting to land in Pittsburgh. It killed 127 passengers and five crew members. The airplane was destroyed by the impact and fire.<\/p>\n<h2>July 19, 1989<\/h2>\n<p>A United Airlines flight experienced an engine failure and crashed while attempting to land in Sioux City, Iowa, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/colorado\/news\/25-years-after-horrific-crash-memories-surface-and-crusades-continue\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">killing 110 passengers<\/a><\/span> and one crew member.<\/p>\n<h2>Aug. 16, 1987<\/h2>\n<p>A Northwest Airlines flight <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/northwest-flight-255-crash-detroit-metro-airport-anniversary\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed<\/a><\/span> just after taking off in Romulus, Michigan, striking light poles, a rental car facility and the ground. The crash killed 148 passengers and six crew members.<\/p>\n<h2>Aug. 2, 1985<\/h2>\n<p>A Delta Air Lines flight <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/santa-barbara-man-who-survived-1985-delta-flight-191-crash-at-dallasfort-worth-airport-speaks-out\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">crashed<\/a><\/span> when approaching to land at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport during a thunderstorm. It struck a car and two water tanks, and killed 134 passengers and crew members.<\/p>\n<h2>July 9, 1982<\/h2>\n<p>A Pan American World Airways flight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwltv.com\/article\/news\/local\/throwback\/pan-am-flight-759-houses-plane\/289-4cfe16ca-8e8e-4fd8-8e2b-f3114d59f9aa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">crashed<\/a> just after takeoff near New Orleans, Louisiana, and collided with trees and houses, killing 145 people onboard.<\/p>\n<h2>Jan. 13, 1982<\/h2>\n<p>An Air Florida flight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/special-reports\/dc-plane-crash\/potomac-river-plane-crash-rekindles-memories-air-florida-flight-90-tragedy-reagan-national-airport\/65-99ed257e-d6dd-4956-a8a8-bdb57eb317c9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plummeted into the Potomac River<\/a>\u00a0near Washington, D.C., killing 70 passengers and four crew members.
