And the answer, in recent years, was often &#8220;substantial.&#8221; Thanks to the highest <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/inflation-june-cpi-report-hit-new-high-40-years-9-1-percent\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">inflation rate<\/a><\/span> in decades and, thus, the highest <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/federal-reserve-hikes-interest-rate-to-22-year-high-july-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">interest rates<\/a><\/span> in more than 20 years to combat it, savers were able to earn upwards of 5% on vehicles like <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/high-yield-savings-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">high-yield savings<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/whats-a-certificate-of-deposit-cd\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">certificates of deposit (CD) accounts<\/a><\/span>. The latter type, in particular, had <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-are-todays-cd-interest-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">rates<\/a><\/span> upwards of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/these-cds-offer-the-highest-rates-right-now-up-to-6-apy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">6%<\/a><\/span> for some specific savers, making them an obvious way to grow and protect your money.<\/p>\n<p>But that was in 2023 and 2024. Towards the end of 2024, the Federal Reserve embarked on an <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/federal-reserve-fed-meeting-interest-rate-cut-decision-december-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">interest rate cut campaign<\/a><\/span> that impacted the returns savers were accustomed to with CDs. And that drop in interest-earning potential is likely to continue later this year as additional cuts are issued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That is, of course, unless savers act promptly to take advantage of today&#8217;s still-elevated interest rate climate. One way to do so is with an <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-much-10000-18-month-cd-earn-opened-june-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">18-month CD<\/a><\/span>, in particular. Before getting started, however, it&#8217;s helpful to know the precise interest-earning potential of this CD term now, in early June 2025. Here are two others:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extended protection against market uncertainty: <\/strong>No one knows where the interest rate climate is heading this summer, or in the months after, let alone six months to a year from now. Compared to the 4%-plus that 18-month CDs come with, then, it becomes clear which is most advantageous for your money now.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The bottom line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With the potential to grow your money by hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars, the benefit of extended financial protection against market uncertainty and the unfortunate reality of low-rate alternatives, an 18-month CD could be the place to keep some of your money right now.
