{"id":29911,"date":"2025-06-04T10:29:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T10:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/removing-fluoride-from-water-could-result-in-25-million-cavities-and-cost-9-8-billion-study-estimates\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T10:29:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T10:29:21","slug":"removing-fluoride-from-water-could-result-in-25-million-cavities-and-cost-9-8-billion-study-estimates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/removing-fluoride-from-water-could-result-in-25-million-cavities-and-cost-9-8-billion-study-estimates\/","title":{"rendered":"Removing fluoride from water could result in 25 million cavities and cost $9.8 billion, study estimates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>New research suggests that removing\u00a0<a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">fluoride<\/a>\u00a0from public water would increase dental care costs and tooth decay for children across the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study, published Friday in the <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2834515?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=053025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">JAMA Health Forum<\/a>, used a nationally representative sample of 8,484 children aged 0 to 19 from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to estimate projected outcomes of stopping water fluoridation in the U.S. \u2014 something some states, including\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/utah-bans-fluoride-public-water-systems-spencer-cox\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Utah<\/a><\/span> and\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/ron-desantis-fluoride-ban-florida-water-2nd-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Florida<\/a><\/span>, have already begun doing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found removing fluoride was associated with an increase in tooth decay of 7.5 percentage points, or 25.4 million cases, and cost approximately $9.8 billion over 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>These effects would disproportionately affect publicly insured and uninsured children, who are already at the highest risk of unmet dental needs, the authors added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen teeth and reduce\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/worst-food-for-teeth-dental-experts-prevent-damage\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cavities<\/a><\/span>, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It does this by repairing and preventing damage to teeth caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce acid, which in turn dissolves minerals in a tooth&#8217;s surface and can even lead to tooth loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tooth decay by itself can be painful and costly to treat but left untreated can cause further problems, including infections and abscesses or even sepsis, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/sugars-and-dental-caries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>. Some research has also linked poor\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/oral-bacteria-alzheimers-disease-study\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">oral health<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to other complications, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/adult-health\/in-depth\/dental\/art-20047475#:~:text=Some%20research%20suggests%20that%20heart,birth%20and%20low%20birth%20weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>\u00a0due to inflammation and infection.<\/p>\n<p>The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water was long considered one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluoridation\/about\/statement-on-the-evidence-supporting-the-safety-and-effectiveness-of-community-water-fluoridation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">greatest public health achievements<\/a> of the last century, but Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has brought it into question,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/robertkennedyjr\/status\/1852812012478398923?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claiming<\/a>\u00a0fluoride is linked to a slew of health problems. Dental experts have told CBS News they <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fluoride-in-water-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">largely disagree<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seventy years of research, thousands of studies and the experience of more than 210 million Americans tell us that water fluoridation is effective in preventing cavities and is safe for children and adults,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/resources\/community-initiatives\/fluoride-in-water\/fluoridation-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0the American Dental Association.<\/p>\n<p>Fluoride can come from a number of sources, including most toothpaste brands, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rfk-kennedy-trunt-fluoride-water-eaf74072a1d037ba37475337b470dcb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">researchers say<\/a>\u00a0drinking water is the main source for Americans.
