CDC urges tracking of new strain."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>After years of largely predictable <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/norovirus-cases-surging-parts-of-us-cdc-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">norovirus<\/a><\/span> waves, the emergence of a new strain might have disrupted the seasonal pattern of outbreaks from this notorious stomach bug, suggests a new report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/tag\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In previous years, the U.S. usually saw norovirus outbreaks increase around December. That marked the start of the season for the virus. But last year&#8217;s season started in October, as a new norovirus strain <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-norovirus-strain-us-wave-stomach-bug\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">called GII.17<\/a><\/span> drove a record wave of outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Continued surveillance is needed to determine if this genotype remains the dominant genotype, as well as whether the norovirus season continues to start earlier than previous years,&#8221; wrote two of CDC&#8217;s top norovirus researchers, in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/31\/7\/25-0524_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an article<\/a> published this month by the agency&#8217;s Emerging Infectious Diseases journal.<\/p>\n<p>Outbreaks have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/norovirus\/php\/reporting\/norostat-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">since slowed<\/a> to usual levels. But with GII.17 now identified in more than 3 in 4 outbreaks in the U.S., its displacement of the GII.4 strain that had previously been dominant is raising questions about whether norovirus season could arrive early again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GII.4 viruses are the main driver for norovirus seasonality. With the decrease of GII.4 outbreaks since 2024, whether GII.17 viruses will continue to cause an earlier onset of the norovirus season cannot yet be determined,&#8221; the CDC researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Several other countries also saw unusually large or shifted waves of norovirus this past year, after GII.17 surged to dominance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In England, norovirus reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/health-protection-report-volume-19-2025\/hpr-volume-19-issue-2-news-27-february-2025#:~:text=27-february-2025-,Update%20on%20increasing%20levels%20of%20norovirus%20activity%20in%20England%2C%20February,2)%20(Figure%201).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reached<\/a> levels more than double recent seasons. GII.17 was the most frequently reported genotype of norovirus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/national-norovirus-and-rotavirus-surveillance-reports-2024-to-2025-season\/national-norovirus-and-rotavirus-report-week-19-report-data-to-week-17-data-up-to-27-april-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">through April<\/a>, far above GII.4.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, where GII.17 <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/23\/8\/16-1138_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously drove<\/a> a wave of infections a decade ago, local health authorities in Tokyo <a href=\"https:\/\/idsc.tmiph.metro.tokyo.lg.jp\/diseases\/gastro\/gastro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> a steep wave of infectious gastroenteritis \u2014 most from norovirus \u2014 that peaked weeks later than previous seasons and remains above recent years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmc.nl\/en\/research\/researchers\/graaf-miranda-de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Miranda de Graaf<\/a>, a scientist at Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands coordinating the global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivm.nl\/en\/noronet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NoroNet<\/a> network of norovirus researchers, said the Dutch nation did not see an earlier start to its norovirus season. But the country did see higher numbers of norovirus outbreaks, including a few large outbreaks in between when the usual seasonal surges occurred.<\/p>\n<p>GII.4 was still being detected around the world, meaning it was possible that GII.17&#8217;s dominance could be short-lived, de Graaf said. Researchers had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurosurveillance.org\/content\/10.2807\/1560-7917.ES2015.20.26.21178#html_fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously wondered<\/a> if GII.17 could permanently take over, only to see GII.4 cases continue to remain dominant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GII.17 only replaced GII.4 last year, and there has not been another seasonal peak after that. Therefore it is not clear if these shifts will last, or if GII.17 will be the predominant strain next winter season,&#8221; de Graaf said in an email.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sph.emory.edu\/faculty\/profile\/index.php?FID=benjamin-lopman-8568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Benjamin Lopman<\/a>, an epidemiology professor at Emory University who previously worked for the CDC&#8217;s viral diseases division, said shifts in norovirus strains happen &#8220;when new variants find ways around the immunity that people have built up&#8221; to previous strains.
