But if you haven\u2019t purchased your chips in Oregon or Washington State, you have little to worry about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Frito-Lay issued the initial recall last month of some of its 13-ounce bags of Lay\u2019s Classic Potato Chips because they could contain \u201cundeclared milk,\u201d or milk that is not in the list of ingredients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration upgraded it to a Class I recall, according to the agency, which is a warning that consumption of the product \u2014 for those who have an allergy or sensitivity to milk \u2014 could cause \u201cserious adverse health consequences or death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s what we know.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5ff41a1b\">Who is affected?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The recall affects consumers in Oregon and Washington who bought the bags of chips as early as Nov. 3, 2024, according to the F.D.A.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6c9ae63e\">What is a Class I recall?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The F.D.A. has three classifications for recalls. Class I, the most severe notice, is \u201ca situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,\u201d the agency says on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/postmarket-requirements-devices\/recalls-corrections-and-removals-devices\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 identifies milk as one of eight major food allergens. (The other seven are eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6d97becd\">Who is at risk?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-53882a02\">Which products are affected?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lays said the bags are were removed from stores after the recall was first issued last month. If you\u2019re worried that you may have these chips in your pantry, here\u2019s what you should look for: The bags have a \u201cguaranteed fresh\u201d date of Feb. 11, 2025, and include the manufacturing code 6462307xx or 6463307xx.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-62fb4ecf\">What about other Lay\u2019s products?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No other products, flavors, sizes or variety packs by Lay\u2019s have been recalled.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-140566be\">Why did the F.D.A. use its most severe classification?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s not clear.
