For toddlers, pediatricians agree that travel is the perfect occasion to forget screen time rules and embrace devices and programming that will help pass the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For babies, sucking something aboard an airplane can help with painful air pressure changes in the ears, so pack a pacifier and a bottle, and if you\u2019re breastfeeding, dress for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/baby\/breastfeeding\/Pages\/How-to-Nurse-on-an-Airplane.aspx?_gl=1*vyr5sh*_ga*MzAyNDY5ODAxLjE3MTcyNzU4Mjc.*_ga_FD9D3XZVQQ*MTcyMTkyMzEyMS45LjAuMTcyMTkyMzEyMS4wLjAuMA..\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">comfortable semipublic nursing<\/a>. Hotels, however, can work well \u2014 breakfast buffets and housekeeping services are always helpful \u2014 but check online comments to see whether guests with babies and toddlers have had good experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When it comes to cribs, alert your hotel, and inquire in advance about availability. Airbnb has a filter for those looking for cribs. Many hosts will specify any additional equipment, including baby monitors. Your best bet, though, is to be in touch with the host. Remember that \u201cchild-friendly\u201d does not mean \u201cchildproof\u201d so look at the details and be particularly vigilant about staircases, fireplaces, pools and hot tubs.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-15e9f1e3\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Sleep when your baby sleeps<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sleep schedules vary widely in children. Some babies can sleep anywhere and through anything, and others need a quiet, dark room. And whatever the hour, if you find a place that works \u2014 and dishes your toddler appreciates \u2014 be prepared to go back.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-72055790\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Throw away the \u2018adult\u2019 sightseeing checklists<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">You may love to visit every church and art collection, but not on this trip. Choose one or two things you would most like to do, consider whether a baby carrier or stroller would work best, and be prepared to shorten or scrub the mission. A portable crib guarantees you a safe sleep surface and may also give you a playpen in a strange room. There are also portable high chairs, which clip on to the edge of a table. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/wirecutter\/reviews\/gear-for-traveling-with-babies-and-kids\/\" title=\"\">Wirecutter<\/a> has a summary of everything from portable cribs to blackout curtains to sound machines.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1c20a88c\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Consider vaccines, emergency plans, and food and water safety<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Well before leaving, check in with your child\u2019s pediatrician. Make sure immunizations are up-to-date, and discuss whether additional shots are needed. The measles vaccine, usually administered at age 1, can be given earlier if you\u2019re going somewhere where measles might be a problem. Hepatitis A vaccines can also be given early. For remote areas, consider seeing a travel medicine expert, and discuss special immunizations and antimalarial drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bring medication your child regularly takes, and ask your pediatrician how to communicate if problems arise. You can also check in advance with rental hosts or concierges about local doctors and hospitals, with particular reference to pediatrics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If your child does get sick while traveling, \u201cthe first thing is to do what you would do if you were at home,\u201d Dr. Barnett said. Consider packing liquid acetaminophen or ibuprofen. A child with vomiting or diarrhea needs liquids immediately to prevent dehydration, and the younger the baby, the more important it is to seek local medical attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an area without safe water, breastfeeding is one way to keep your baby safe; for a child drinking anything else, be rigorous about using boiled or bottled water, and stick to cooked foods and peelable fruits.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-43bb195b\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Don\u2019t lose sight of the sun<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Wherever you are, prioritize <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/15\/well\/family\/shielding-kids-from-the-sun-isnt-just-about-sunscreen.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\">sun safety<\/a>. Bring sunscreen and hats, and keep young children covered up in the bright sun.
