The fees have brought more revenue to the airlines than it ever had prior to the pandemic, the data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Airlines began shifting their checked bag policy in recent years to keep up with <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jetblue-flight-bag-check-fees-dynamic-pricing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">what they say are rising operational costs<\/a><\/span>, including higher prices for fuel and increased wages.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/southwest-airlines-new-checked-bag-fee-35\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Southwest Airlines<\/a><\/span> announced it will start charging $35 for the first checked bag \u2014 after more than 50 years of only charging for a third bag. Changes at Southwest came amid mounting pressure from activist investors to improve its financial performance.
