The rare animals \u2014 located on Rottnest Island near Australia&#8217;s west coast in the Indian Ocean \u2014 are also helping fund their own conservation efforts, thanks to their contagious smiles.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny island is home to unspoiled wilderness, pristine beaches and the quokkas. Known as the world&#8217;s happiest animals, celebrities like Roger Federer, Margot Robbie and Logan Paul have snapped selfies with the adorable animal. Scientists say quokkas are naturally curious and have adapted to being around tourists.<\/p>\n<p>There are also rules to interacting with quokkas. For example, It&#8217;s forbidden to feed or touch them. They even have the right of way on roads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re so cute. They&#8217;re adorable,&#8221; said Kacie Wellington. &#8220;I mean they look like they&#8217;re smiling.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the Australian mainland, quokkas are threatened by wildfires and feral cats, but on the island, they have no natural predators and are fearless and friendly with humans.<\/p>\n<p>They have been called a conservation success story, with demand for selfies fueling the tourism that helps fund their protection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re just a very chilled animal,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ria.wa.gov.au\/about-us\/about-rottnest-island-authority\/organisational-structure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arvid Hogstrom<\/a>, who is in charge of conservation on Rottnest Island.<\/p>\n<p>Hogstrom explained that the quokkas are not actually smiling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just part of their natural physiology,&#8221; he said, but added he suspects they&#8217;re happy animals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They lead a pretty easygoing life,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So I don&#8217;t see any reason why they wouldn&#8217;t be happy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n<p><h3 class=\"component__title\">More from CBS News<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>    <!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/holly-williams\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Holly  Williams<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Holly Williams is a CBS News senior foreign correspondent based in the network&#8217;s CBS London bureau.
