Kennedy Jr.<\/a> said Tuesday that he would remove the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/tag\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>&#8216;s recommendation for children and healthy pregnant women to get vaccinated for <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-reports-cases-new-covid-variant-nb-1-8-1-behind-surge-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">COVID-19<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t be more pleased to announce that, as of today, the COVID vaccine for healthy children and healthy pregnant women has been removed from the CDC&#8217;s recommended immunization schedule,&#8221; Kennedy said in a video attached to his post.<\/p>\n<p>However, as of Tuesday morning, the CDC had so far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/imz-schedules\/child-adolescent-age.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not updated<\/a> the immunization schedule to reflect the removal announced by Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy&#8217;s move, announced Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecKennedy\/status\/1927368440811008138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on X<\/a>, appears to effectively shortcut a process set up by the agency&#8217;s outside advisers to discuss and make changes to the CDC&#8217;s influential vaccination guidance, which is directly tied to what insurers are required to cover and liability protections.<\/p>\n<p>Those advisers had already been weighing whether and how to narrow the agency&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-vaccine-2025-fda-seniors-clinical-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">COVID-19 vaccine recommendations<\/a><\/span> to only older adults and other people with an underlying condition that put them at risk of more severe illness from COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy&#8217;s announcement also goes further than the advisory panel, which had been weighing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/acip\/downloads\/slides-2025-04-15-16\/05-Panagiotakopoulos-COVID-508.pdf#page=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including pregnant women<\/a> as among those who would remain eligible for COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, given <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-19-risks-pregnant-women-babies-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">their increased risk<\/a><\/span> of severe disease and the fact that it could also help provide some <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-vaccine-pregnancy-protects-newborn-babies-cdc-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">protection to their newborns<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The move also puts Kennedy at odds with his new officials at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/tag\/food-and-drug-administration\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a>, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMsb2506929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recently said<\/a>\u00a0pregnancy was among the underlying conditions that warranted continued eligibility for COVID-19 vaccine approvals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear why Kennedy chose to announce the decision without waiting for the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to complete its deliberations. The panel <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-covid-vaccine-recommendations-advisers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">had been expected<\/a><\/span> to vote on the issue at the routinely scheduled June meeting hosted by the agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the COVID-19 pandemic behind us, it is time to move forward. HHS and the CDC remain committed to gold standard science and to ensuring the health and well-being of all Americans \u2014 especially our nation&#8217;s children \u2014 using common sense,&#8221; Vianca N. Rodriguez Feliciano, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy has also stalled other overdue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/acip\/vaccine-recommendations\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recommendations<\/a> from the panel for respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, vaccines and meningococcal vaccines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The committee had voted on updated recommendations for those vaccines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/acip\/meetings\/upcoming.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in April<\/a>. Usually it is up to the CDC director to approve the recommendations.
