Kennedy Jr. spoke at length about issues in health and medicine, including the cause of chronic illnesses, Covid-19 and ultraprocessed foods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is a running list of key health claims, fact-checked by our reporters.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-38d438d9\">Chronic Disease<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy\u2019s opening statement focused on rising chronic health conditions, saying there was a crisis in children\u2019s health in the United States. Many experts agree \u2014 though they disagree about the causes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/school-health-conditions\/chronic-conditions\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Forty percent<\/a> of children have a chronic health condition, and the figure is higher for adolescents when obesity is included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Roughly one in 36 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/autism\/data-research\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to data<\/a> from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2022\/20220126.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">One in four<\/a> has an allergy or eczema, and rates of Type 2 diabetes <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/data-research\/research\/trends-new-diabetes-cases-young-people.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have been rising<\/a> in those 19 and under every year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And while Type 2 diabetes rates are rising, they are still low: According to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/about-diabetes\/statistics\/about-diabetes\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the American Diabetes Association<\/a>, it occurs in 0.35 percent of Americans under the age of 20.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-57527ce8\">Who Covid-19 Affects<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado pressed Mr. Kennedy on a statement Mr. Kennedy made in 2023 in which he suggested that the coronavirus <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/15\/us\/politics\/rfk-jr-remarks-covid.html\" title=\"\">targeted and spared certain ethnic groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cCovid-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people,\u201d he said in a video from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/15\/rfk-jr-says-covid-was-ethnically-targeted-to-spare-jews\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Post<\/a>. \u201cThe people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In response to Mr. Bennet, Mr. Kennedy referred to a federally funded <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7360473\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">study from the Cleveland Clinic<\/a> published early in the pandemic that tried to decipher who was most susceptible to the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Scientists have said that Mr. Kennedy\u2019s interpretation of the study <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/15\/us\/politics\/rfk-jr-remarks-covid.html\" title=\"\">widely distorted the findings in the paper<\/a>. While it found genetic differences that might make one individual more susceptible to Covid than another, the differences were too rare to make any generalizations about large groups of people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-a269f7b\">Children\u2019s Risk From Covid<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During the hearing, Mr. Kennedy also asserted that 6-year-old children \u201cbasically\u201d have \u201czero\u201d risk from Covid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/hcp\/clinical-care\/for-pediatric-hcp.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">C.D.C. has noted<\/a> that children with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk from severe outcomes from Covid, as well as infants younger than six months of age.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7d5e26d4\">Ultraprocessed Foods and Obesity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early in the hearing, Mr. Kennedy singled out processed food as a driver of the obesity epidemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be giving 60 percent of the kids in school processed food that is making them sick,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many public health and nutrition experts say that ultraprocessed foods \u2014 which make up an estimated <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-37457-1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">73 percent of the U.S. food supply<\/a> \u2014 are probably a factor in the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/14\/well\/obesity-epidemic-america.html\" title=\"\">obesity crisis<\/a> in the United States, and it would be beneficial to cut back on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But other researchers say that the obesity epidemic is likely a result of many entangled factors, both environmental and genetic, and that the phenomenon may have started <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adg6237\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">long before there were ultraprocessed foods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The category is also wide-ranging, and it\u2019s not clear if <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/05\/well\/eat\/ultraprocessed-foods-types-unhealthy-study.html\" title=\"\">all ultraprocessed foods are harmful<\/a>, experts say. There may be downsides to avoiding some ultraprocessed foods, like flavored yogurts and whole wheat breads and cereals, they add, because they can provide valuable nutrients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lindsey Smith Taillie, an associate professor of nutrition at the U.N.C. Gillings School of Global Public Health, said that it would be \u201ctransformative\u201d to remove ultraprocessed foods from school lunches. But, she added, schools would need more resources to prepare meals from scratch.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-405179d2\">Medicare and Medicaid<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Throughout the hearing, Mr. Kennedy struggled with the nuances of Medicaid and Medicare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He suggested \u201cmore people would rather be on Medicare Advantage\u201d but can\u2019t afford it because it\u2019s more expensive. In fact, Medicare Advantage is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/healthpolicy.usc.edu\/article\/medicare-advantage-cost-comparison-health-affairs\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">generally less expensive<\/a> on a monthly basis for beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also described Medicaid as being fully federally funded. Spending is actually split between the states and the federal government. He went on to describe the premiums and deductibles as being too high when, except in very rare cases, Medicaid enrollees do not pay either of those types of fees.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7ce0f354\">Fluoride in Water<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy referenced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/08\/health\/fluoride-children-iq.html\" title=\"\">a recent study<\/a> that found an association between fluoride and I.Q. \u2014 research that he felt vindicated his earlier concerns about the dangers of fluoridated drinking water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the description of the study\u2019s findings was accurate, there are notable caveats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The study, by scientists from the federally funded National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, was an analysis of dozens of fluoride studies, which found higher fluoride exposures <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2828425\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">were linked to lower I.Q. scores<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">However, researchers cautioned that none of the studies included in the analysis were conducted in the United States, where recommended fluoridation levels in drinking water are very low.
