All of them wanted to know about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/27\/technology\/what-is-deepseek-china-ai.html\" title=\"\">DeepSeek<\/a>, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/27\/technology\/deepseek-ai-chatbot-first-impressions.html\" title=\"\">Chinese artificial intelligence app<\/a> that topped the app stores over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">DeepSeek had created a powerful A.I. model with far less money than most A.I. experts thought possible, upending many assumptions underlying the development of the fast-evolving technology. To calm the panic, Mr. Jacobs said he explained to his investors that Radical Ventures had long invested in more efficient A.I. models, similar to the one made by DeepSeek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cLet\u2019s focus on the companies who are actually building real businesses, rather than the ones that are chasing science fiction,\u201d Mr. Jacobs said he told them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/27\/business\/deepseek-nvidia-ai-chips.html\" title=\"\">Nvidia<\/a>, Google, Meta and other giant tech companies have faced a barrage of questions about DeepSeek since last week as the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/28\/business\/deepseek-owner-china-ai.html\" title=\"\">Chinese start-up<\/a> toppled longstanding notions about A.I. But its repercussions are being felt beyond the largest firms, reaching into the venture capital industry that has bet big on the technology by plowing billions of dollars into A.I. start-ups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For two years, venture capital firms have been engaged in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/14\/technology\/ai-funding-boom.html\" title=\"\">funding frenzy<\/a>, pouring more than $155 billion into A.I. start-ups between 2023 and 2024, according to PitchBook, which tracks start-ups. Two of those A.I. companies \u2014 OpenAI and Anthropic \u2014 have raised $24 billion and $16 billion with the goal of building A.I. that is as intelligent as humans. OpenAI\u2019s valuation has hit $157 billion \u2014 more than Pfizer or Citigroup \u2014 while Anthropic\u2019s valuation has reached $20 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">What DeepSeek did has now called that funding fever into question. If a Chinese upstart can create an app as powerful as OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT or Anthropic\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/13\/technology\/claude-ai-anthropic.html\" title=\"\">Claude chatbot<\/a> with barely any money, why did those companies need to raise so much cash? <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a good look right now\u201d for some A.I. companies \u201cgiven their talk about needing ever larger scale to come up with the best model,\u201d said Matt Turck, an investor at FirstMark Capital. But, he added, A.I. companies would ultimately need money, computing power and infrastructure to serve their customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Venture capitalists have debated the best way to invest in A.I. ever since OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022. Some investors have argued that the technology underpinning ChatGPT and other products \u2014 often referred to as \u201cfoundation models\u201d because they can power many applications, including chatbots, search engines and image generators \u2014 is not a good investment because the systems are expensive to create and easy for competitors to copy. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Marc Andreessen, an investor at Andreessen Horowitz, last year called such systems a \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfo.com\/news\/marc-andreessen-speculates-llm-developers-may-be-in-a-race-to-the-bottom-trial-balance-cfo\/730206\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">race to the bottom<\/a>\u201d<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>and speculated that building a business with this type of A.I. would be like \u201cselling rice\u201d where anyone can compete.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With the hubbub caused by DeepSeek in recent days, venture capital investors who have not invested in foundation model companies like OpenAI and Anthropic \u2014 either because they anticipated the race to the bottom or because they did not have the money or opportunity \u2014 have used the moment to share their views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eric Vishria, an investor at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/13\/technology\/andreessen-horowitz-benchmark-venture-capital.html\" title=\"\">the venture firm Benchmark<\/a>, said on social media on Monday that he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ericvishria\/status\/1883922233875484694\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">believed<\/a> foundation models were \u201cthe fastest depreciating asset in human history.\u201d Anjney Midha, an investor at Andreessen Horowitz, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnjneyMidha\/status\/1883911056118157808\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> that DeepSeek showed \u201cthe current AI foundation model market structure is far from stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Investors who have backed foundation model companies defended their investments. Gavin Baker, an investor at Atreides Management, which has invested in Elon Musk\u2019s A.I. start-up X.ai, said he felt good about his bet because A.I. companies are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/19\/technology\/artificial-intelligence-data-openai-google.html\" title=\"\">limited by how much data<\/a> they can access. X.ai, he said, was in a strong position because it has its own unique source of data from the social network X, which Mr. Musk also owns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFor me, I feel very, very calm,\u201d Mr. Baker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other tech leaders have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FredaDuan\/status\/1883754652984098897\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dissected<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GavinSBaker\/status\/1883891311473782995\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">DeepSeek\u2019s claim<\/a> that it only spent $6 million to create its A.I. model, which is a fraction of what other companies spend. Some pointed fingers at regulation, including former <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidSacks\/status\/1883935713877782884\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">President Biden\u2019s A.I. executive order<\/a> and California\u2019s failed attempt to enact a state law on A.I., for trying to hold back the industry\u2019s progress. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They also bemoaned export restrictions on powerful A.I. chips as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/alexandr_wang\/status\/1883370447980642619\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ineffective<\/a> in stopping Chinese tech advances. Some lashed out at so-called A.I. safety advocates, who have tried to slow the development of A.I. because of its potential risks to humanity. Others invoked patriotism and said DeepSeek was a sign that the United States needed to move faster in A.I. Still others saw the moment as an opportunity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Turck said DeepSeek\u2019s breakthrough might be bad news for some of the largest A.I. companies, but it opened up possibilities for other firms that were just getting started. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe panic over the last few days is a dramatic overreaction,\u201d he said in a message. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Niko Bonatsos, a venture capital investor at General Catalyst, said in an interview that DeepSeek had energized start-ups. \u201cIf you are building anything that is touching A.I. and you haven\u2019t been excited, obsessed, scared and sleep-deprived over the last four days, what planet are you living on?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bonatsos spent Monday morning on the phone with the founders of companies who had enthusiastically built their own \u201cforked\u201d versions of DeepSeek\u2019s technology, meaning they had copied and customized it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many of these start-ups were already building software on platforms developed by OpenAI and Anthropic, he said. DeepSeek had showed people new techniques for developing A.I. models that are cheaper to train and maintain, he said, which could lead to more competition and possibly some \u201ccreative destruction\u201d for incumbents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s capitalism,\u201d Mr. Bonatsos said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cl\u00e9ment Delangue, the chief executive of Hugging Face, a start-up that allows A.I. companies to post projects and work together, said on Tuesday that more than 600 versions of the DeepSeek model had been created on his site in just a few days.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">   <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Investors are bracing for more surprises in the coming weeks.
