The blanks \u2014 flat, metal discs that the Mint turns into coins \u2014 will run out in early 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/penny-coin-mint-ending-2026-b1717de0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news.<\/p>\n<p>The penny, which dates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/learn\/coins-and-medals\/circulating-coins\/penny#:~:text=The%20penny%20was%20one%20of,with%20flowing%20hair%20symbolizing%20liberty.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early days of the U.S. Mint<\/a> after its establishment in 1792, now costs more to manufacture than the coin is worth. The 1-cent coin cost about 3.7 cents to manufacture and distribute in 2024, according to the U.S. Mint&#8217;s 2024\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/content\/dam\/usmint\/reports\/2024-annual-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">annual report<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ending production of the penny will save the Mint about $56 million in annual savings, the Treasury said on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite their coppery look, pennies are mostly made of zinc, with their distinctive appearance coming from a copper overlay. Zinc&#8217;s cost per metric ton is more than double what it was in 2000, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/PZINCUSDM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data<\/a>\u00a0from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration had recently signaled it was out to stop making the 1-cent coin, with Elon Musk&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency saying in January that the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-doge-trump-federal-spending-penny-179-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">penny was too costly<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to produce. In February, President Trump said he had directed the Treasury to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-directs-treasury-to-stop-minting-new-pennies-citing-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">stop minting new pennies,<\/a><\/span> citing the rising production costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents.
