In August 2011, Standard and Poor&#8217;s downgraded the U.S. from AAA to AA+, and in August 2023\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fitch-downgrade-us-debt-what-it-means-cbs-news-explains\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Fitch Ratings cut the credit rating<\/a><\/span> a notch from AAA to AA+.<\/p>\n<p>Moody&#8217;s said it expects federal deficits to grow from 6.4% of GDP in 2024 to 9% of GDP by 2035, driven by &#8220;increased interest payments on debt, rising entitlement spending and relatively low revenue generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The credit downgrade came as the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/house-budget-committee-reconciliation-gop-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">House Budget Committee on Friday rejected<\/a><\/span>\u00a0President Trump&#8217;s domestic policy bill, which would extend tax cuts from his first term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the 2017 Tax Cuts and Job Act is extended, it would add $4 trillion to the federal primary deficit (excluding interest payments) over the next decade, Moody&#8217;s said Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>    <!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/megan-cerullo\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Megan  Cerullo<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Megan Cerullo is a New York-based reporter for CBS MoneyWatch covering small business, workplace, health care, consumer spending and personal finance topics.
