According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/microeconomics\/hhdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the latest Household Debt and Credit Report,<\/a> credit card balances dropped slightly to $1.18 trillion in Q1 2025 \u2014 down $29 billion from the end of 2024 \u2014 but they&#8217;re still 6% higher than this time last year. And that&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-today-april-2025-inflation-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">despite inflation cooling<\/a><\/span> and the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jobs-report-today-april-2025-economy-tariffs-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">job market exceeding expectations<\/a><\/span> over the last few months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/credit-card-delinquencies-are-rising-ways-to-pay-off-what-you-owe\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">default rates have been rising recently<\/a><\/span>, too. Over the past year, a growing number of cardholders have been missing payments and falling into serious delinquency. One of the issues is that the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/why-credit-card-rates-are-so-high-now-what-to-do-about-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">average credit card APRs<\/a><\/span> remain close to 22%, which can cause the average cardholder&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heres-how-much-credit-card-debt-the-average-american-has-and-how-to-pay-it-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">nearly $8,000 credit card balance<\/a><\/span> to grow out of control quickly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So when you add in the other economic hurdles, like today&#8217;s elevated rate and price environment, it&#8217;s hardly surprising that some borrowers wonder if they can legally <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-happens-if-you-cant-pay-your-credit-card-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">stop paying their credit card debt<\/a><\/span>.
