The strike is expected to inconvenience more than 300,000 daily commuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NJ Transit suggests people work from home, if possible, and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-transit-strike-phil-murphy-shakira-metlife-stadium\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">all options are on the table<\/a><\/span>, even a state of emergency.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p>The agency and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-transit-strike-mediator\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have been at odds over pay raises<\/a><\/span>. The union, which represents about 460 engineers, says the competition pays more and the cost of living has gone up. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both sides <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-transit-strike-engineers-amtrak-path\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">negotiated for six hours Wednesday<\/a><\/span> but were unsuccessful, and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-transit-rail-strike-2025-midnight-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">negotiations continued all day Thursday<\/a><\/span> but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/gov-phil-murphy-nj-transit-president-update-commuters-on-pending-engineers-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">no deal was reached<\/a>. They also went to Washington, D.C. earlier this week <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-transit-engineers-union-strike-mediators-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">to meet with a federal mediator<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last NJ Transit strike was back in 1983 and it lasted about three weeks. Most recently, there was a potential strike in 2016, but it was averted just a day before it was scheduled to begin.<\/p>\n<h2>NJ Transit rail strike contingency plan<\/h2>\n<p>NJ Transit <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-transit-engineers-strike-kris-kolluri\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">came up with a contingency plan<\/a><\/span> for the strike, including additional bus service. But the agency&#8217;s chief executive warned the plan can only handle about 20% of daily train riders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NJ Transit is enhancing peak service on the following New York bus routes:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Northeast Corridor:\u00a0 108, 112, 115 and 129 bus routes<\/li>\n<li>North Jersey Coast Line:\u00a0 116 and 133\/135 bus routes<\/li>\n<li>Raritan Valley Line:\u00a0 112 and 113 bus routes<\/li>\n<li>Morris &amp; Essex Lines:\u00a0 107 bus routes<\/li>\n<li>Montclair-Boonton Lines:\u00a0 193 and 324 bus routes<\/li>\n<li>Main\/Bergen County Lines:\u00a0 145, 163, 164 and 190 bus routes<\/li>\n<li>Pascack Valley Line:\u00a0 163, 164 and 165 bus routes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Boxcar, which partners with motor coach operators like Yankee, is stepping in with more buses to get suburban riders to Manhattan from six different New Jersey areas.<\/p>\n<p>Commuters can also take Amtrak, PATH, SEPTA, light rail or ferry service.<\/p>\n<p>NJ Transit says rail tickets and passes will be cross-honored on its bus and light rail lines, but will not be accepted on the other carriers.
