The comes a week after the central bank announced it would\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fed-meeting-decision-today-fomc-interest-rates-may-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">hold interest rates steady<\/a><\/span> amid a period of economic uncertainty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We may be entering a period of more frequent, and potentially more persistent, supply shocks \u2014 a difficult challenge for the economy and for central banks,&#8221; Powell said Thursday at research conference in Washington, D.C., where U.S. bankers are meeting to discuss monetary policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Analysts\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/chinese-china-products-tariffs-shortages-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have also warned<\/a><\/span> that U.S. companies could face inventory shortfalls as a result of tariff-induced supply chain issues. Container bookings from China to the U.S. dropped as much as 60% following the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/chinese-china-products-tariffs-shortages-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">pre-tariff spike<\/a><\/span> in imports according to Flexport, a supply chain management company.<\/p>\n<p>Powell acknowledged at the conference that the economic environment has changed since the Fed&#8217;s last strategy meeting in 2020, when interest rates were far lower than they are today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Longer-term interest rates are a good deal higher now, driven largely by real rates given the stability of longer-term inflation expectations,&#8221; Powell said on Thursday, referring to interest rates adjust for inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The federal funds rate currently sits at 4.25% to 4.50%. The Fed last week <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fed-meeting-decision-today-fomc-interest-rates-may-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">decided to hold that rate steady<\/a><\/span> \u2014 \u00a0a sign it is still weighing the economic risks posed by the Trump administration&#8217;s tariffs. The central bank is scheduled to meet again in mid-June, where it&#8217;s expected to maintain its benchmark rate at its current range, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/markets\/interest-rates\/cme-fedwatch-tool.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">predictions<\/a> from CME FedWatch.<\/p>\n<h2>Inflation volatility<\/h2>\n<p>Powell also warned that higher real rates could unleash greater inflation volatility than what the U.S. experienced during the &#8220;inter-crisis period of the 2010s&#8221; \u2014 the timespan between the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic when the economy was in recovery mode.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-today-april-2025-inflation-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">eased slightly last month<\/a><\/span>\u00a0but is still above the Fed&#8217;s 2% goal.<\/p>\n<p>Powell&#8217;s comments come as the American consumers and businesses continue to grapple with economic uncertainty as a result of the Trump administration&#8217;s stop-and-go tariff policies. Mr. Trump and his team have been <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-trade-deals-china-europe-india-uk-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">meeting with foreign leaders<\/a><\/span> in recent weeks to negotiate deals before the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tariffs-china-trump-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">90-day pause<\/a><\/span> on reciprocal tariffs lifts in July.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, during an event with business leaders in Qatar, Mr. Trump said the Indian government has offered to eliminate tariffs on U.S. goods,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-15\/trump-says-india-offered-to-remove-all-tariffs-on-us-goods?sref=sBMxP0gT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>Recent trade deal announcements with the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-uk-trump-starmer-major-trade-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">U.K.<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-china-tariffs-deal-90-days-trump-admin-trade-talks-progress\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">China<\/a><\/span>\u00a0have heartened the stock market which <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/stocks-up-china-tariffs-pause-agreement-may-12-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">soared on Monday<\/a><\/span> following the U.S. agreement with China.
