Here&#8217;s what to know about symptoms, causes."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/postpartum-mental-health-care-still-out-of-reach-for-many-despite-destigmatization-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Postpartum depression<\/a><\/span> isn&#8217;t just something <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/recognizing-the-signs-of-postpartum-depression-ppd-and-zurzuvae\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">new moms<\/a><\/span> can struggle with \u2014 studies show new dads can also be affected.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK519070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1 in 7 women<\/a> experiences postpartum depression \u2014 but more awareness is being brought to men, who can also experience the mental health condition associated with intense feelings of sadness, anxiety and exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had to have awareness about postpartum depression in women, then postpartum anxiety disorder in women, and now postpartum depression in men, which is a real thing in about 10% of men,&#8221; CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/how-mens-minds-and-bodies-may-change-after-they-become-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">on &#8220;CBS Mornings Plus&#8221; Tuesday.<\/a> <\/p>\n<h2>Postpartum depression symptoms in men\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Symptoms of postpartum depression symptoms in men &#8220;can be tricky,&#8221; LaPook said, as they might be mistaken as something else.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you&#8217;re a new father, a new parent, you&#8217;re tired, you may be sad, you may feel like out of control, but there are some specific things that are very typical of postpartum depression in men,&#8221; he said, including:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase in irritability or anger<\/li>\n<li>Increased isolation<\/li>\n<li>Increase in risky behavior, including things like gambling and substance abuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What causes postpartum depression in men?<\/h2>\n<p>Both physiological and environmental factors play a role in men developing postpartum depression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While men don&#8217;t have as dramatic of hormonal changes as women do during pregnancy, LaPook said there are studies showing testosterone level can go down during and after a partner&#8217;s pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The skin-to-skin that women want to have with the baby \u2014 now they&#8217;re encouraging skin-to-skin with men, because it&#8217;s been shown, even just holding the baby, to increase oxytocin levels and bonding,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sleepless nights with a newborn and new parent worries also play a role in mental health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a combination as always,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We all remember those times in the middle of the night when you feel out of control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And while studies show men have the highest levels of postpartum depression during the first 3 to 6 months after birth, LaPook says it&#8217;s important to remember it can happen anytime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You really want to be aware of it,&#8221; he said, adding research shows postpartum depression can have a lasting negative impact on kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \"\/><!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/sara-moniuszko\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Sara Moniuszko<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Sara Moniuszko is a health and lifestyle reporter at CBSNews.com.
