The Eaton and Palisades fires \u2014 the second and third-most destructive fires in California history \u2014 destroyed a combined 16,248 buildings and damaged thousands more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the request, State Farm faced backlash from Eaton Fire survivors over apparent insurance payment delays. State Sen. Sasha Ren\u00e9e P\u00e9rez, who represents the burn scar residents, asked for the state to delay the decision until an expedited investigation into the complaints in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decision to grant State Farm&#8217;s unprecedented request for an emergency rate increase disregards the hardships faced by fire victims and their calls for accountability,&#8221; said P\u00e9rez.<\/p>\n<p>Lara, who has also faced <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/la-wildfires-state-insurance-commissioner-state-farm-hike\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">backlash<\/a><\/span>\u00a0over the approval, assured residents that he weighed the options before adopting the decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am focused on ensuring that State Farm pays its claims to wildfire survivors fully and fairly \u2014 and nothing is off the table,&#8221; Lara said. &#8220;I am balancing all the facts. Protecting all State Farm customers and the integrity of our insurance market is an urgent matter. Let me be clear: We are in a statewide insurance crisis affecting millions of Californians. Taking this on requires tough decisions.
