It does this by repairing and preventing damage to teeth caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce acid, which in turn dissolves minerals in a tooth&#8217;s surface and can even lead to tooth loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Poor oral health has been linked to complications including cardiovascular disease, and experts\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fluoride-in-water-health\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have told CBS News<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that preventative care is the best way to keep dental health in check.<\/p>\n<p>But, in the release, the FDA says ingested fluoride has been shown to &#8220;alter the gut microbiome,&#8221; adding &#8220;other studies have suggested an association between fluoride and thyroid disorders, weight gain and possibly decreased IQ.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the same release, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said ending the use of ingestible fluoride is &#8220;long overdue.&#8221; Kennedy has a long history of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fluoride-in-water-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">questioning fluoride&#8217;s safety<\/a><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/robertkennedyjr\/status\/1852812012478398923?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claiming<\/a>\u00a0it&#8217;s linked to a number of health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Dental experts largely disagree.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Aaron Yancoskie, associate dean of academic affairs at Touro College of Dental Medicine, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/communities-debate-on-removing-fluoride-from-its-water-supplies\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;CBS Mornings Plus&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0in<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>November there is &#8220;excellent, solid data going back 75 years, showing that fluoride is both safe and it&#8217;s extremely effective at decreasing dental decay, that is, cavities, by strengthening the enamel of our teeth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The action against ingestible fluoride comes after Kennedy, in April, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-end-fluoride-water-utah-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">called for the end of community water fluoridation<\/a><\/span>, praising Utah&#8217;s move to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/utah-bans-fluoride-public-water-systems-spencer-cox\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ban the mineral<\/a><\/span> from being added to public water systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It makes no sense to have it in our water supply. And I&#8217;m very, very proud of this state for being the first state to ban it.
