Nine people were in custody, police said.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people die every year in India from drinking cheap alcohol made in backstreet distilleries. Bootleggers sell vast quantities at cut rates to the poor, without paying taxes to the government.<\/p>\n<p>To increase its potency, the liquor is often spiked with methanol that can cause blindness, liver damage and death.<\/p>\n<p>The latest incident happened late on Monday after villagers in the Amritsar district, in the northern state of Punjab, drank liquor laced with methanol.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now death toll is 21. In July 2002,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/india-spiked-liquor-at-least-28-dead-dozens-sick\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">28 people died<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and 60 became ill after drinking bootleg liquor in the western state of Gujarat, where the sale of alcohol is banned.<\/p>\n<p>Last November in Laos,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/laos-tainted-alcohol-death-toll-several-detained\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">six tourists died<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from suspected
