Many of them were serious enough to require medical attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The commission <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MyFWC\/status\/1904526058700886065\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has been urging people<\/a> to exercise caution in or near the water during alligator mating season, which runs from early April to June. The risk of an attack is higher, it said, because alligators tend to be more aggressive, active and visible during this time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agency and other wildlife commissions offered these tips for avoiding or staying safe around the reptiles, which can grow up to 15 feet long.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4c431f74\">Where are they?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Alligators can be found from central Texas eastward to North Carolina, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Louisiana and Florida have the largest populations \u2014 more than one million each. Georgia has 200,000 to 250,000 alligators and South Carolina is home to about 100,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Morgan Hart, the alligator project leader for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, believes alligator attacks have increased in the state over the years because of \u201cthe sheer growth in human population in the coastal plain of South Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When new housing developments are built, artificial lakes are often created with them and then quickly inhabited by alligators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3a0daece\">Be alligator aware.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you encounter an alligator on land, \u201cyou can simply back away from it,\u201d Ms. Hart said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAlligators will also hiss if they feel someone is too close and they can\u2019t get away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People should be wary of any alligator that approaches, she said, as it may be a sign that it has been fed and associates humans with food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Humans should also keep at least 30 feet from alligators at all times, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/huntwild\/wild\/species\/alligator\/safety\/index.phtml\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey rarely chase people, but they can outrun or outswim the fastest person for the first 30 feet,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/park-information\/safety\/alligator-safety\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the agency said<\/a>, noting that alligators can sprint up to 35 miles per hour for short distances on land.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4f5351bf\">Watch your children and dogs closely.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Alligators prefer to pursue prey they can easily overpower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPets often resemble alligators\u2019 natural prey,\u201d said Lauren Claerbout, a spokeswoman for the Florida wildlife commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/r\/1KuxzJ6J1p\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">should keep their pets on a leash<\/a> and under control, and not allow them to swim or exercise in canals, ponds or lakes that may have alligators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe sound of dogs barking and playing may draw an alligator to the area,\u201d the Florida wildlife commission said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-30eeaea7\">Be careful where you swim.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Wildlife agencies suggest that people swim only in designated areas during daylight hours, and without a pet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAlligators are most active between dusk and dawn,\u201d Ms. Claerbout said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you encounter an alligator in the water, remain calm and do not approach it, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.sc.gov\/wildlife\/alligator\/pdf\/safetyquestions.pdf#:~:text=Again%2C%20remain%20aware%20of%20your%20surroundings%2C%20and,your%20presence%2C%20move%20away%20from%20the%20alligator.&amp;text=Move%20away%20from%20the%20alligator%20and%20the,away%20from%20you%20and%20towards%20the%20water.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Florida wildlife commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-55a761d1\">Don\u2019t feed them.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is illegal, and dangerous, to feed alligators in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas (except during that state\u2019s hunting season).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said that people should not throw fish scraps into the water or feed other wildlife in areas where alligators congregate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAs long as people don\u2019t feed them,\u201d said Donald Houser, the general manager at Gator Park, which is just south of Miami and features shows with alligators. He added that an alligator loses its fear of humans after three days of a person feeding it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cJust stay away from it, basically,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1126e1f4\">How to fight back.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">You should fight back against an alligator only if it gets hold of you, officials said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn that case, aim for its eyes, nose or throat, which are its most sensitive areas,\u201d according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.evergladesholidaypark.com\/guide-avoid-alligator-attacks\/#:~:text=Fight%20Back,escape%20to%20seek%20medical%20help.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Everglades National Park in South Florida<\/a>, adding that people should \u201chit, kick, or jab with as much strength as you can muster to try and force the gator to release its grip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, if you are grasped in an alligator\u2019s jaws, there is a slim chance that you would be able to escape, Mr. Houser said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou better have someone close that knows what they are doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAlligators don\u2019t eat people,\u201d he said, but they may bite someone and then spit the person out.
