What to know about Cassie and the other accusers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Sean &#8220;Diddy&#8221; Combs&#8217; sex trafficking and racketeering trial is expected to get underway after <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-jury\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the jury is sworn in<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Monday in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The hip-hop mogul is <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-trial-sex-trafficking-charges-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">accused of running a criminal enterprise since at least 2004<\/a><\/span> that manipulated women into participating in commercial sex acts with him, and sometimes male sex workers, during what prosecutors described as drug-fueled parties called &#8220;freak offs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Combs <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-denied-bail-sex-trafficking-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">has been jailed<\/a><\/span> at the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-jailed-mdc-brooklyn-r-kelly-sam-bankman-fried\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Metropolitan Detention Center Brooklyn<\/a><\/span> since <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-arrested-federal-custody\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">his arrest last September<\/a><\/span>. He\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-superseding-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">faces five counts from four different women<\/a><\/span>, including singer and ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about the charges and other key names in the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Who is Cassie Ventura? Hotel video a key piece of evidence<\/h2>\n<p>Ventura, who performs under the name Cassie, rose to fame with the single &#8220;Me &amp; U&#8221; on her self-titled debut album. The song landed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot R&amp;B\/Hip-Hop chart in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>She and Combs dated off-and-on from about 2007 to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Security video of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/disturbing-video-appears-to-show-sean-diddy-combs-assaulting-cassie-ventura\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Combs attacking Ventura in the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel in 2016<\/a><\/span> is expected to be a key piece of evidence in his trial. The video,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/17\/entertainment\/sean-combs-cassie-ventura\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">obtained and published<\/a>\u00a0by CNN last year, shows Combs throw Ventura onto the floor before kicking and dragging her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors allege the hotel assault happened during a &#8220;freak off,&#8221; but Combs&#8217; lawyers, who\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/diddy-cassie-beating-footage-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sought to have the video excluded from trial<\/a><\/span>, argue it was a &#8220;glimpse into a complex but decade-long consensual relationship.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ventura <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-accused-of-rape-abuse-cassie-ventura\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">filed a federal lawsuit against Combs in 2023<\/a><\/span>, accusing him of rape and physical abuse. The suit also said Combs paid the hotel $50,000 for the footage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After years in silence and darkness, I am finally ready to tell my story, and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships,&#8221; Ventura said in a statement to CBS News at the time. &#8220;With the expiration of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-adult-survivors-act-child-sex-abuse-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">New York&#8217;s Adult Survivors Act<\/a><\/span> fast approaching, it became clear that this was an opportunity to speak up about the trauma I have experienced and that I will be recovering from for the rest of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Combs <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-apologizes-alleged-attack-seen-2016-surveillance-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">later apologized for the behavior seen on the video<\/a><\/span>, but denied the allegations in the lawsuit. In a social media post that has since been removed, he said he was &#8220;f&#8212;ed up&#8221; and &#8220;hit rock bottom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I take full responsibility for my actions in that video,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I was disgusted then when I did it. I&#8217;m disgusted now. I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I&#8217;m so sorry. But I&#8217;m committed to be a better man each and every day. I&#8217;m not asking for forgiveness. I&#8217;m truly sorry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One day after the suit was filed, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cassie-ventura-sean-diddy-combs-settlement-lawsuit-alleging-abuse-rape\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a settlement was announced<\/a><\/span>. While the details were not disclosed, Ventura said in a statement, &#8220;I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Who are the other accusers?<\/h2>\n<p>Since 2023, dozens of women and men have <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-sexual-assault-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">filed lawsuits against Combs<\/a><\/span> alleging sexual and physical abuse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of the accusers said they were <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-sexual-assault-lawsuit-2000\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">drugged and then abused while incapacitated<\/a><\/span>, and some claimed <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jay-z-sean-diddy-combs-sexual-assault-lawsuit-dropped-by-accuser\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">other celebrities were present or participated<\/a><\/span> in the abuse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-to-face-120-accusers-alleged-sexual-misconduct\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">majority of those allegations<\/a><\/span> are not part of the criminal case. Prosecutors have chosen to focus on allegations where there is physical evidence or witness corroboration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The other three women involved in the trial <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-diddy-combs-accusers-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have not been publicly named<\/a><\/span> and they are expected to testify using pseudonyms. The indictment refers to them as Victim-1, Victim-2 and Victim-3.  <\/p>\n<p>Combs denied all of the allegations through his lawyers, who have said the women are &#8220;former long-term girlfriends, who were involved in consensual relationships.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Other high-profile names in the case<\/h2>\n<p>Prospective jurors were asked if they were <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/diddy-trial-start-jury-selection-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">familiar with a list of some 190 celebrities<\/a><\/span>, including Michael B. Jordan, Kanye West and Mike Myers, though it wasn&#8217;t clear how those people are related to the trial, if at all.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The judge overseeing the case is U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, a Columbia Law School graduate and former clerk for the late <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/ruth-bader-ginsburg-brooklyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/a><\/span>. President Joe Biden appointed Subramanian as a federal judge in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution team is made up of eight assistant U.S. attorneys, seven of them women. They include Maurene Ryan Comey, daughter of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/james-comey-deal-two-crime-novels-inspired-by-real-work-ive-done\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">former FBI Director James Comey<\/a><\/span>. She was one of the prosecutors in the trial of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/ghislaine-maxwell-sentence-20-years-jeffrey-epstein-sex-abuse-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Ghislaine Maxwell<\/a><\/span>, who was convicted of conspiring <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/grand-jury-documents-released-jeffrey-epstein-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a><\/span> to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ghislaine-maxwell-30-years-in-prison-federal-prosecutors-argue\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">recruit and sexually abuse teenage girls<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Combs&#8217; defense team is led by New York lawyer Marc Agnifilo, who along with his wife <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/luigi-mangione-united-healthcare-shooting-hires-karen-friedman-agnifilo\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Karen Friedman Agnifilo<\/a><\/span> is also defending\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/luigi-mangione-legal-defense-fun-unitedhealthcare-ceo-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Luigi Mangione<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/midtown-manhattan-shooting-hilton-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the seven-person defense team is Atlanta attorney Brian Steel, who represented Young Thug in a trial that <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/young-thug-racketeering-trial-delayed-codefendant-stabbed-atlanta-fulton-county-jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">lasted nearly two years<\/a><\/span> before the rapper <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/young-thug-co-defendants-not-guilty-murder-georgia-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">pleaded guilty to gang, drug and gun charges<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you watch the Diddy trial live?<\/h2>\n<p>Per federal court rules, photos and videos from inside court are not allowed. Courtroom sketches, however, are permitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The highly anticipated trial is expected to last eight to 10 weeks.
