The only Ivy League president who did not sign the letter was Sian Beilock, the president of Dartmouth College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Instead, she wrote her own letter to her campus, saying that higher education institutions should strive to do better, \u201cto further our standing as a trusted beacon for knowledge and truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cReflection does not mean capitulation,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is the kind of message, her critics and supporters say, that has so far helped to keep Dartmouth out of the Trump administration\u2019s cross hairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Six of the eight Ivies are facing major funding threats, to the tune of billions of dollars, as the federal government attempts to punish them over concerns about antisemitism and other issues. Harvard University alone could lose over $2 billion. And every Ivy but Dartmouth is being investigated over allegations that they have allowed antisemitism on campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While Dartmouth hasn\u2019t been targeted specifically, it would not emerge unscathed if the Republican administration gets its way. Higher endowment taxes could bring a significant financial blow, for example. And the administration\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/06\/us\/student-protesters-immigration-detention-first-amendment.html\" title=\"\">visa crackdown<\/a> has entangled some current and former Dartmouth students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock\u2019s supporters see her as a champion of free expression and dialogue among people with different political viewpoints. They say she has been consistent, supporting these ideas long before the Trump administration or even the Hamas attack on Israel complicated campus politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s just so clear to me this is something she\u2019s genuinely committed to,\u201d said Malcolm Mahoney, the leader of the Dartmouth Political Union, a nonpartisan group that sponsors debates. \u201cIt\u2019s not something she does for political ease.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But to her critics, she is trying to placate conservatives in a bid to spare Dartmouth from retribution. They say she has hurt, not helped, political tensions on campus, pointing to a police crackdown on a pro-Palestinian demonstration last year that many students and faculty said was unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A number of reasons may also explain why Dartmouth has not faced the same pressure as its peers. Dartmouth, a small liberal arts college in rural New Hampshire with a tightly knit student body, may be off the radar of Washington lawmakers. It has also been known for having a more conservative bent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And Dr. Beilock appears to have carefully positioned her school in territory friendly to conservatives. She has hired a former Republican Party official for a key administrative job, focused on free expression in her public messages and taken a hard-line approach toward protesters. She has also sought friends in high places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">White House officials have recently heaped praise on Dartmouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was so impressed to learn how Dartmouth (my alma mater) is getting it right, after all these years,\u201d Harmeet Dhillon, a Trump loyalist who heads the Justice Department\u2019s civil rights division, wrote on social media last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dhillon said Dr. Beilock had recently met with her team in the message. (The White House did not respond to a request for comment.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cKudos to Dartmouth!\u201d Ms. Dhillon added. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an interview, Dr. Beilock said her university has been careful about protecting free speech. \u201cBut free expression does not mean robbing other people of free expression, shouting down speakers, taking over shared space and declaring it for one ideology,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock said she reached out to Ms. Dhillon, adding that she talks to alumni across the political spectrum. They talked about academic freedom, viewpoint diversity and \u201cthe importance of being fiercely independent as an institution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At 49, Dr. Beilock is the youngest Ivy League president and has been on the job less than two years. A wave of her peers \u2014 the presidents of Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia \u2014 resigned following backlash over how they handled pro-Palestinian student protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock, by contrast, won praise from conservatives as a model of university leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In what her supporters and critics describe as a watershed moment for the university, she authorized armed state police to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/13\/us\/dartmouth-campus-protests-police-beilock.html\" title=\"\">end a protest encampment<\/a> on the college green. Student activists said the protest was peaceful, but the school said the tents were unauthorized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was a contrast from how the university handled another famous protest on the green in the 1980s, when the president tolerated a shantytown that students created to protest apartheid in South Africa. One night, a dozen students, mostly from the conservative student newspaper, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1986\/02\/12\/us\/dartmouth-suspends-12-for-attack-on-shanties.html\" title=\"\">smashed the shanties<\/a> with sledgehammers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After President Trump took office, Dr. Beilock named Matthew Raymer, the former chief counsel at the Republican National Committee, as the university\u2019s top lawyer. As late as January, Mr. Raymer had argued in support of Mr. Trump\u2019s plan to end birthright citizenship. Mr. Raymer now oversees Dartmouth\u2019s Office of Visa and Immigration Services, a move student activists say has terrified international students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The hiring of Mr. Raymer represents \u201cthe kind of difference in viewpoint across my team,\u201d Dr. Beilock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe hired Matt not as Dartmouth\u2019s Republican lawyer, but as Dartmouth\u2019s lawyer,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t hire people based on political party.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her posture toward the Trump administration has divided the campus. More than 2,500 Dartmouth alumni have signed a petition calling on Dr. Beilock to \u201cjoin the growing ranks of colleges and universities that are resisting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou\u2019re Embarrassing Us,\u201d read a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedartmouth.com\/article\/2025\/04\/verbum-ultimum-youre-embarassing-us\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">headline<\/a> in the student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock\u2019s posture represents \u201ca wink and a nod to the Trump administration,\u201d said Roberta Millstein, a member of the Class of 1988 and an organizer of the alumni letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But another alumnus, Gerald Hughes, also from the Class of 1988, started his own petition describing Dr. Beilock as a \u201cfree speech leader\u201d who is \u201ctaking a measured and deliberate approach.\u201d It has received more than 500 signatures from alumni, faculty and students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock, a cognitive scientist who studies how high-performing people <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Choke\/Sian-Beilock\/9781416596189\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">choke under pressure<\/a>, said she is not going to change her approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock served as a faculty member and then executive vice provost at the University of Chicago. That school was an early champion of institutional neutrality, the idea that school officials should avoid opining on politics or social issues except when central to the university\u2019s mission. Dartmouth <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/policies.dartmouth.edu\/policy\/institutional-restraint-statements-dartmouth-and-its-academic-units\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recently adopted<\/a> a similar policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Beilock said her experience at Chicago had \u201ca big impact on how I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Chicago also hasn\u2019t signed onto the letter from the university leaders.
