Soon after, a respected genealogist surprised the world by revealing that the new pope\u2019s heritage connected him to far more strands of the American experience than previously known.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Robert Francis Prevost, 69, who took the name Pope Leo XIV, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/08\/us\/pope-leo-creole-new-orleans.html\" title=\"\">descended from Creole people of color<\/a> from New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The detective work of Jari Honora, the New Orleans genealogist and historian, was based on analysis of historical documents, including census records, many of which are presented here. Other documents were unearthed by the archdiocese of New Orleans or obtained independently by The New York Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In their totality, the documents begin to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/09\/us\/pope-creole-roots-new-orleans.html\" title=\"\">trace the story of a family<\/a>, on Pope Leo\u2019s mother\u2019s side, with a diverse background rooted in New Orleans\u2019s unique Afro-Caribbean culture that later moved to Chicago in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is unclear why they left, but many Creole families like theirs moved north at the time in search of better-paying jobs and a less racially hostile environment \u2014 a story that finds parallels in the new pope\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/09\/g-s1-65476\/pope-leo-xiv-trumps-america-vatican#:~:text=Like%20his%20predecessor%2C%20Leo%2C%20born,a%20Catholic%2C%20on%20the%20church\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">emphasis<\/a> on tending to migrants and poor people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The documents also suggest a story not uncommon among some American people of color who underwent such journeys: a switch in racial categorization from Black to white. One of the pope\u2019s brothers, John Prevost, 71, who lives in the suburbs of Chicago, confirmed the family\u2019s ancestry but told The New York Times that he and his brothers always considered themselves to be white.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As for his mother, he said, \u201cI really couldn\u2019t tell you for sure. She might have just said Spanish.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-d911\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1870<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Perhaps the earliest known record of the pope\u2019s maternal grandfather, Joseph Martinez, is a listing in the 1870 census, taken when he was 6. Martinez\u2019s father is listed as Jacques Martinez, 48, a tailor, while his mother, Marie, 43, \u201ckeeps house.\u201d The birthplace of everyone in his family is indicated as Louisiana.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-d937\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1887<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Joseph Martinez married Louise Baqui\u00e9, the pope\u2019s maternal grandmother, on Sept. 17, 1887. Martinez is listed on the marriage certificate as a native of Haiti. Baqui\u00e9 is the daughter of Ferdinand Baqui\u00e9 and Eugenie Grambois.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Both of Louise\u2019s families had long New Orleans roots. The archdiocese of New Orleans unearthed records documenting the marriage of her parents in 1864, and the baptism of her mother \u2014 one of the pope\u2019s great-grandmothers \u2014 in 1840 at St. Louis Cathedral. The baptismal font where she received her first sacrament remains there today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-dbf9\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1900<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Joseph and Louise Martinez are both recorded as New Orleans residents on the 1900 census. They had two daughters at the time, Irma and Margaret, and an aunt appeared to be living at their address. All are listed as \u201cB\u201d for Black.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The occupation of Joseph, who appears on Line 6, is noted as \u201ccigar maker,\u201d and his place of birth as \u201cHayti,\u201d lining up with the origin on his marriage certificate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-dc01\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1908<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The document below from 1908, known as a settlement (or probate in other jurisdictions), divides the possessions of Joseph\u2019s parents between their heirs. Those assets included a home worth about $800 at the time. Mr. Honora, the genealogist, noted that there are \u201cBeaucoup New Orleans family names\u201d among the various heirs, documenting the links between the pope\u2019s grandfather and many other New Orleans families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-dc18\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1910<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The 1910 census misspells the Martinez family\u2019s surname on Line 35 as \u201cMartina,\u201d and lists their race as \u201cW,\u201d for white. Joseph\u2019s birthplace is listed as \u201cS. Domingo,\u201d capital of the Dominican Republic (and possibly, faintly above, \u201cWest Indies\u201d?). The record appears to indicate Joseph\u2019s father was Maltese and his mother was Spanish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are now three different places of origin listed for the pope\u2019s maternal grandfather on various historical documents: Louisiana, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Mr. Honora said it wasn\u2019t uncommon at the time for people to change their responses to record takers \u2014 part of the challenge of such research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-dc19\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1911<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The family appears to have moved to Chicago after the 1910 census, though the exact date of their migration north is uncertain. This is a digital record from Cook County of the birth certificate of Mildred Martinez, the pope\u2019s mother, who was born in Chicago and later known as Millie Prevost after she married. Her race is listed as white. (Other documents, also from Cook County, indicate her birth year as 1912.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The birthplace of her father is listed as Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, while her mother, listed here as \u201cLouise Baquiex,\u201d is identified as a New Orleans native. The races of her parents are not indicated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-dc37\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">1920<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/18CaN1SELqBDUHv40UUulCx7gnByMgRCd\/view?usp=drive_link\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1920 census<\/a> shows the Martinez family, including Mildred, Joseph and Louise\u2019s youngest daughter, in Chicago.
