I don\u2019t know if feelings are going to be hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This past week, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-persian-gulf-saudi-arabia-ce30874c27bc01426d93ad3c65a18844\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press reported<\/a> that Mr. Trump planned to announce the renaming on his tour of several Arab countries, which have been lobbying for the change for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The turquoise blue water has been called the Persian Gulf since at least 550 B.C., when the Persian dynasty of Cyrus the Great ruled an empire that spanned from India to the edges of western Europe. Ancient Persia is now modern-day Iran, and its entire southern coast stretches along the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Iran\u2019s governments, going back to the pre-revolution era of the shah, have stoutly defended Persian Gulf as the only legitimate name. So have Iranians inside and outside the country, who view the name as a core part of their national and cultural identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By suggesting the name change, Mr. Trump has seemingly done the impossible: Unite Iranians of all political, ideological and religious factions. They have spoken out in statements and social media posts, condemning Mr. Trump\u2019s idea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7b74163\">Can Trump really rename the Gulf?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has the power to order changes to geographical names as they are used in the United States. But other countries do not have to honor those changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This year, he issued an executive order to update the government\u2019s Geographic Names Information System in order to change all references for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/02\/13\/world\/americas\/gulf-mexico-trump.html?searchResultPosition=4\" title=\"\">the Gulf of Mexico<\/a> to the Gulf of America. (On Friday, President Claudia Sheinbaum said the Mexican government had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/09\/us\/politics\/gulf-of-mexico-suit-google.html\" title=\"\">sued Google<\/a> over its decision to abide by Mr. Trump\u2019s order.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/geonames.nga.mil\/geonames\/GNSSearch\/GNSDocs\/pdfdocs\/fnc\/Persian_Gulf_Statement_Latest.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Board on Geographic Names<\/a> currently mandates use of the Persian Gulf for official U.S. business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Globally, the International Hydrographic Organization works to standardize and chart marine boundaries. But the organization <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/trump-gulf-of-mexico.html\" title=\"\">told The New York Times this year<\/a> that there was \u201cno formal international agreement or protocol in place for naming maritime areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-48c93745\">How have Iranians reacted?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s idea drew condemnation from a broad cross-section of Iranians, who are often divided on many topics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt goes beyond politics; it goes beyond religious divisions and ideologies \u2014 it\u2019s about the nation and its history, and it has hit a chord,\u201d said the historian Touraj Daryaee, director of the Center for Persian Studies at the University of California-Irvine. \u201cDoes Trump want to negotiate with Iran or does he want to take away its national identity?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Daryaee said that since ancient times Iranians have referred to their nation as \u201cab o khakh,<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">\u201d<\/em> which means \u201cwater and earth.\u201d Two bodies of water \u2014 the Persian Gulf in the south and the Caspian Sea to the north \u2014 are deeply intertwined in the Iranian psyche as symbols of nationhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ahmad Zeidabadi, a prominent analyst in Tehran, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Zeidabadi_Ahmad\/status\/1920176470846287916\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">posted on X<\/a>, \u201cJust because of Trump\u2019s wishes and whims, the Gulf of Mexico will not become the Gulf of America, Canada will not join the United States, Greenland will not become a possession of the United States, and the Persian Gulf will not take on a fake name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Iran\u2019s national soccer team weighed in with a map of the Persian Gulf and a trending hashtag #ForeverPersianGulf on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/abdolah_abdi\/status\/1920056348324106655\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">its official Instagram page.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even Iranian opposition figures expressed their displeasure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Reza Pahlavi, son of the deposed shah of Iran who supports Mr. Trump and encouraged him to abandon diplomacy with the government in Tehran, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PahlaviReza\/status\/1920154505129107524\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said on social media<\/a>, \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s reported decision to distort history, if true, is an insult to the Iranian people and our great civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-23900b7\">What\u2019s the history of the Persian Gulf?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Persian Gulf name has been used throughout history, in maps, documents and diplomacy, from the time of the ancient Persians, whose empire dominated the region, to the Greeks and the British.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The push to call it the Arabian Gulf gathered steam during the Pan-Arab nationalist movement of the late 1950s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United Nations uses the term the Persian Gulf. A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/unstats.un.org\/unsd\/geoinfo\/UNGEGN\/docs\/23-gegn\/wp\/gegn23wp61.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2006 paper by a U.N. working group<\/a> found unanimity in historical documents on the term, which it said was coined by the Persian king Darioush in the fifth century B.C.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2e89d596\">Will this affect the Iran-U.S. nuclear talks?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Iran and the United States have held three rounds of negotiations, mediated by Oman, on Iran\u2019s advancing nuclear program, and they are scheduled to meet again on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United States wants to prevent Iran from weaponizing its nuclear program, and Iran wants to remove sanctions that have hobbled its economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div
