The center has been operating with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-organization\/scott-steele\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">acting director<\/a> since Marks left the FDA in March.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Prasad brings the kind of scientific rigor, independence, and transparency we need at CBER\u2014a significant step forward,&#8221; FDA Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrMakaryFDA\/status\/1919802781466079264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted on X<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Prasad has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VPrasadMDMPH\/status\/1826766019752591721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">long criticized<\/a> the FDA for granting emergency use authorization for COVID-19 vaccine boosters, saying last year that Marks was &#8220;either incompetent or corrupt to authorize a booster without clinical, randomized data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After Marks was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fda-top-vaccine-official-peter-marks-forced-out-decries-rfk-jr-misinformation-and-lies\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">forced out<\/a><\/span> by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Prasad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drvinayprasad.com\/p\/the-same-media-that-lied-about-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called Marks<\/a> &#8220;one of the most dangerous, pro-pharma regulators of the 21st century&#8221; and a &#8220;mediocre academic&#8221; before joining the government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You could replace Peter Marks with a bobblehead doll that just stamps approval and you would have the same outcome at FDA with lower administrative fees,&#8221; Prasad <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VPrasadMDMPH\/status\/1902820280369914165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted<\/a> on March 20, the week before Marks was ousted.<\/p>\n<p>Prasad joins the agency at a time when the FDA says it is <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fda-covid-booster-shots-marty-makary\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">looking<\/a><\/span> at whether it will approve annual updates to the COVID-19 vaccines this fall, as part of a routine process that had been due to start next month. Officials have floated the possibility of requiring new randomized trials before approving future updates to COVID shots.<\/p>\n<p>A week ago, Prasad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drvinayprasad.com\/p\/5-reasons-why-the-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> he backed the idea of new randomized clinical trials before approving COVID shot updates, calling it &#8220;absurd&#8221; that the U.S. was still offering COVID vaccinations to young children and warning that strain changes could result in changes to efficacy and safety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Without trials, it is only a matter of time before the FDA approves a vaccine that causes some bad outcome like vaccine-induced narcolepsy. If this happens, you can kiss faith in vaccines goodbye. You will see vaccine hesitancy like you have never seen before,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Prasad&#8217;s following grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, as he criticized measures like <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VPrasadMDMPH\/status\/1490840192638324739\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vaccine mandates<\/a> and called for Moderna&#8217;s vaccine <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VPrasadMDMPH\/status\/1564088565524357120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to be banned<\/a> in men under 40.<\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunizationmanagers.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/VAC-meeting-presentation-Addressing-COVID-Vaccine-Hesitancy-in-Parents_2023.pdf#page=6'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accused<\/a> alongside Makary and Dr. Tracy H\u00f8eg of being a prominent purveyor of misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>H\u00f8eg now works for the FDA as a special assistant to Makary, and replaced the agency&#8217;s representative on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an email to employees shared with CBS News, Makary said that Prasad &#8220;brings a great set of skills, energy, and competence to the FDA, and I know that he is eager to begin immersing himself in the important work of CBER and the agency as a whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Makary commended Prasad&#8217;s &#8220;long and distinguished history in medicine,&#8221; including his posting now at the University of California at San Francisco as a professor in its Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n<p><h3 class=\"component__title\">More from CBS News<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>    <!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/alexander-tin\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Alexander  Tin<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Alexander Tin is a digital reporter for CBS News based in the Washington, D.C. bureau.
