Kennedy Jr.<\/a><\/span>, has a<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/rfk-kennedy-politifact-lie-of-year-2023-autism-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">long history<\/a> of\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-vaccine-skeptics-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">raising doubts<\/a><\/span> about <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-vaccine-access-hhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">vaccines<\/a><\/span> \u2014 despite decades of evidence showing they&#8217;ve saved millions of people from debilitating illness or death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People forget what it used to be (before vaccines),&#8221; CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook said on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/breaking-down-trumps-health-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;CBS Mornings Plus,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0pointing to data showing a huge decline in cases and deaths from these diseases compared with pre-vaccine levels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you look at the 10 top childhood illnesses every year, vaccines prevent more than 1 million cases and more than 10,000 deaths&#8221; in the U.S., he said. Worldwide, the numbers are even greater, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7482790\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimated<\/a> 2-3 million lives saved by childhood vaccinations each year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what else to know about the impact of vaccines.<\/p>\n<h2>How do vaccines work?<\/h2>\n<p>Vaccines work by imitating organisms like viruses and bacteria without making you sick. &#8220;That gives your immune system a chance to build up defenses so you&#8217;re better prepared to fight a future infection,&#8221; LaPook said.<\/p>\n<p>Your immune system creates specific defenses called antibodies against the imitation pathogen \u2014 known as an antigen \u2014 introduced by the vaccine. &#8220;An antigen might be a germ that has been killed or changed so it cannot cause disease. It can be something that looks or behaves like a pathogen, a harmless part of a pathogen, or instructions for the body to manufacture the harmless part,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then if you encounter the actual pathogen later in life, your immune system is prepared to respond quickly to fight it.<\/p>\n<p>Some vaccines effectively block illness, while others help prevent you from getting more severely sick if infected. So while it is true you can still get some illnesses after you&#8217;ve been vaccinated \u2014 like the flu or COVID, for example \u2014 the vaccines are still helpful in reducing the risk of severe illness or death.<\/p>\n<p>If your body has a strong immune reaction to a vaccine, you might feel tired or experience body aches, headache, swollen lymph nodes or even a fever, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. These potential side effects are normal and typically last no more than a day or two.<\/p>\n<h2>What do vaccines accomplish?<\/h2>\n<p>Vaccines have vastly reduced deaths in early childhood and largely eradicated certain diseases that used to cause dreaded epidemics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(24)00850-X\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> led by the World Health Organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/24-04-2024-global-immunization-efforts-have-saved-at-least-154-million-lives-over-the-past-50-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimates<\/a> that vaccines, including immunizations against <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-the-fight-against-polio-was-won\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">polio<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-vaccine-we-are-victims-of-our-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles<\/a><\/span> and 12 other once-common diseases, have saved an estimated 154 million lives worldwide over the past 50 years. Measles vaccines alone have averted the deaths of about 94 million people, the analysis found.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, however, with\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/kindergarten-routine-vaccination-rates-fell-for-second-straight-year-cdc-warns\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">backsliding<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/school-vaccination-exemptions-record-kindergartners-cdc\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">immunization rates<\/a><\/span>, health officials are starting to see the effects of skipping shots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have to remember too far back to see what happens because of vaccination rates, when there aren&#8217;t requirements and people don&#8217;t have access,&#8221; Dr. Carolyn Bridges, the CDC&#8217;s former associate director for adult immunizations, recently\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-vaccine-access-hhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">told CBS News<\/a><\/span>, citing a\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/polio-case-new-york-rockland-county\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">polio case<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that emerged in New York\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/polio-virus-found-new-york-city-wastewater-health-department\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">in 2022<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s just mind-boggling that we can have a polio resurgence, in a country with all of our resources. It doesn&#8217;t take all that much for diseases still circulating in other places to retake hold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Polio cases and deaths before and after vaccines<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-salk-polio-vaccine-a-medical-miracle-turns-60\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Outbreaks of polio<\/a><\/span> once killed thousands of Americans and left many survivors paralyzed, until the disease was virtually eliminated in the U.S. by vaccines that first rolled out in the 1950s.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:507px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-UKHnD\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/UKHnD\/full.png\" alt=\"Line chart showing the number of polio cases in the U.S. from 1939 to 2024\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/UKHnD\/2\/\"><br \/>\n<\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>For decades now, the polio vaccine (inactivated polio vaccine or IPV) has been part of the routine childhood immunization schedule in the U.S., as it&#8217;s the best way to protect against the virus. There is no cure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A total of four doses is recommended for the best level of protection. Research shows two doses of IPV provide <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4197908\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 90% protection<\/a> while three doses provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/polio\/vaccines\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">at least 99% protection<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Measles cases and deaths before and after vaccines<\/h2>\n<p>Despite being easily preventable<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with a readily available vaccine,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-cases-states-2024-more-than-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles cases<\/a><\/span>\u00a0have been\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-cases-rose-worldwide-2023-who\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">on the rise<\/a><\/span> in recent years, due largely to an uptick in people skipping vaccination. Measles is highly contagious, and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreaks-schools-vaccination-rates-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">lower vaccination rates<\/a><\/span> give it an opening to spread.<\/p>\n<p>Before the vaccine became available in the 1960s, measles was very common in childhood. About 48,000 Americans were hospitalized for it each year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idsociety.org\/public-health\/measles\/know-the-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 500<\/a>, mostly children, would die.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:453px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-9ufFu\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/9ufFu\/full.png\" alt=\"Line chart showing the number of measles cases in the U.S. from 1939 to 2024\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/9ufFu\/3\/\"><br \/>\n<\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>One dose of the MMR vaccine, which covers measles, mumps and rubella, is <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8189124\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">93% effective<\/a>\u00a0against measles and the recommended two doses is 97% effective, research shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most people who are vaccinated will be protected for life, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/preventing-measles-outbreaks-in-the-us-through-vaccination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/procedures\/mmr-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/blog\/cultivating-health\/what-you-should-know-about-measles-and-how-the-mmr-vaccine-can-protect-your-family\/2024\/11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">organizations<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mmr\/public\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">say<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Rubella cases and deaths before and after vaccines<\/h2>\n<p>Rubella, also known as German measles, is especially dangerous during pregnancy, when it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or severe birth defects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/rashestoresearch\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major outbreak<\/a> in the U.S. in the mid-1960s, before the vaccine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rubella\/vaccine-impact\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">records show<\/a> 11,000 pregnant women lost their babies, 2,100 newborns died, and about 20,000 babies were born with lifelong disabilities due to the virus.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:453px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-li8jR\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/li8jR\/full.png\" alt=\"Line chart showing the number of rubella cases in the U.S. from 1966 to 2024\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/li8jR\/1\/\"><br \/>\n<\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>The MMR vaccine, first introduced in 1971, is <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6913082\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 97% effective<\/a> at preventing rubella after just one dose, research shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though rubella is no longer endemic \u2014 meaning constantly present \u2014 in the United States, it remains a problem in other parts of the world.
