But it is the arrangement of the letters on his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basilicasantamariamaggiore.va\/en\/eventi-e-novita\/2025\/descrizione-della-tomba-di-papa-francesco-nella-basilica-papale.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tombstone<\/a> that are now attracting outsize attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The simple slab has only 10 letters, but the spacing between them can make it read like \u201cF R A NCISC VS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Of course, the lettering is meant to be read as Franciscus, the derivative of the pope\u2019s name in Latin. (V stood for both u and v in Latin.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Pope Francis\u2019 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2025-04\/popes-tomb-reads-franciscus.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">marble<\/a> tomb reflects his simple style and fulfills his desire for an unadorned final resting place. In that sense, the tombstone lettering in Times Roman, a workmanlike font that is widely used in the English language, could be considered appropriate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But for those who obsess about kerning, the space between letters, the view from above the tomb is not exactly an aesthetically pleasing one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWoe be unto the person who decided to do it the way that they did it, just because it\u2019s a bad decision that will last for a long time, unless they change it,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monotype.com\/studio\/charles-nix\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Nix, the senior executive creative director at Monotype<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s largest typeface and technology companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In typography, Mr. Nix said, there is general spacing, which is the overall space between letters within a typeface. Kerning, though, is the space between letters or characters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said that, in addition to designing the actual letter, typographers design the space around each letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe spend a lot of time, especially late in the design process, making sure that we have harmonious spacing,\u201d Mr. Nix said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut even after getting the spacing as good as it can possibly be, you still end up with pairs of letters, like a capital A and a capital T, that end up having a lot of space between them,\u201d he added. \u201cSo we create special kerning pairs and program them into the typeface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The double take for some when they look at the letters on the tombstone is caused by the lack of kerning between pairs of letters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So what happened at the Vatican?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt may have been laid out as individual letters, and not actually typed,\u201d Mr. Nix said. \u201cSo it may not have been a font that created the template for it. It may have been that individual letters were put on whatever pattern was used, and they were spaced mathematically as opposed to visually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For centuries, people have tried to figure out a mathematical way to engrave letters, he said, and it always fails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A representative of the Vatican could not immediately be reached for comment about the lettering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A lack of kerning is common on grave markers, Mr. Nix said, especially those from the 20th century onward because they are produced very mathematically. That method is far less costly and can accommodate much more text, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An editor at Fast Company, a magazine about business, technology and design, was among the first to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91324550\/kerning-on-pope-francis-tomb-is-a-travesty\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">notice<\/a> the discordance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other more casual observers immediately pointed to the \u201cA\u201d in Franciscus standing apart from the other letters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhy does it look like pressing on the letter \u2018A\u2019 will open a secret chamber where the ark of the covenant is stored?\u201d asked <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ky0YOo7_Y0o\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Elle Cordova<\/a>, a digital creator, comedy writer and grammarian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt looks like they downloaded a bootlegged version of Times Roman without any kerning data embedded in the file, brought it into some ancient software, like Adobe Scribe 1517 A.D., and then let the software space the letters,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd this is what you get: an abomination unto design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Paul Shaw, a type and design historian, was equally disappointed, saying that the poor spacing was predictable because \u201cRAN\u201d and \u201cCVS\u201d have letters (RA and V) that historically have needed adjustment by hand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPope Francis\u2019 name was just cranked out by someone operating a stonecutting machine, probably via sandblasting from a template prepared on a computer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an email, Evan Sult, an art director and designer based in Brooklyn, wrote: \u201cWe all recognize that there are far more fundamentally significant aspects of lived life than how text is presented, the life and legacy of the Pope being perhaps one of the ultimate examples.
