Kennedy Jr. will direct federal health agencies to explore potential new treatments for the disease, including vitamins, according to an H.H.S. spokesman. The decision is the latest in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/13\/health\/kennedy-vaccines-confidence-access.html\" title=\"\">series of actions<\/a> by the nation\u2019s top health official that experts fear will undermine public confidence in vaccines as an essential public health tool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The announcement comes as Mr. Kennedy faces intense backlash for his handling of the outbreak. It has swept through large areas of the Southwest where vaccination rates are low, infecting hundreds and killing two young girls. On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 930 cases nationwide, most of which are associated with the Southwest outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics have said Mr. Kennedy has focused too much on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/health\/texas-measles-outbreak-kennedy.html\" title=\"\">untested treatments<\/a> \u2014 such as cod liver oil supplements \u2014 and offered only <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/02\/health\/measles-vaccination-texas-kennedy.html\" title=\"\">muted support for<\/a> the measles vaccine, which studies show is 97 percent effective in preventing infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The decision to put more resources into potential treatments, rather than urging vaccination, could have grave consequences at the center of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want to send the signal that you don\u2019t have to get vaccinated because there\u2019s just a way to get rid of it,\u201d said Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at the Brown University School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Scientists have already thoroughly studied various vitamins and medications as potential treatments for<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>measles, said Michael Osterholm an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Decades of research have turned up no miracle treatment for the measles virus, which can cause pneumonia, making it difficult for patients to get oxygen into their lungs, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/04\/05\/health\/measles-children-symptoms.html\" title=\"\">brain swelling<\/a>, which can cause blindness, deafness and intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that there\u2019s been a lack of studies,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Measles patients are typically offered \u201csupportive care\u201d to help make them more comfortable while the virus runs its course, like Tylenol to bring down their fever, supplemental oxygen and IV fluids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The decision to look for new treatments is meant to help people who chose not to vaccinate, the H.H.S. spokesman, Andrew Nixon, said. He added that the C.D.C. still recommends the measles, mumps and rubella shot as the most effective way to prevent measles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But, he said, \u201cOur commitment is to support all families, regardless of their vaccination status, in reducing the risk of hospitalization, serious complications and death from measles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As an example of such a community, Mr. Kennedy <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6lW5yiE_hss\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pointed to the Mennonites<\/a> in West Texas, who have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/17\/health\/measles-texas-mexico-canada.html\" title=\"\">experienced the brunt<\/a> of the cases and hospitalizations in the current outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Nixon said the C.D.C. will collaborate with universities to test new treatments for a \u201chost of diseases,\u201d which may include a combination of existing drugs and vitamins. The news of this effort was first reported by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-cdc-measles-treatment-guidance\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Public health experts were baffled by Mr. Kennedy\u2019s decision to hunt for new treatments, rather than endorse shots that have decades of safety and efficacy data. They said this seemed to contradict his longstanding <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/07\/health\/rfk-hhs-diabetes-obesity-disease.html\" title=\"\">focus on disease prevention<\/a> instead of treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is akin to saying, \u2018Go ahead and eat whatever you want, don\u2019t exercise, smoke like a chimney \u2014 we\u2019re going to invest all of our resources in heart transplants,\u2019\u201d said Dr. Jonathan Temte, a former chairman of the C.D.C.\u2019s vaccine advisory committee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the course of the current measles outbreak, Mr. Kennedy has offered inconsistent, and at times contradictory, messaging about the M.M.R. shot. At some points, he has described the vaccine as \u201cthe most effective way to prevent the spread of measles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other times, he has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/09\/health\/kennedy-offers-qualified-support-for-measles-vaccination.html\" title=\"\">questioned its safety<\/a>: \u201cWe don\u2019t know the risks of many of these products because they\u2019re not safety tested,\u201d he said in an interview with CBS News last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Doctors in West Texas have said Mr. Kennedy\u2019s focus on treatments, rather than vaccines, has already made their jobs difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early in the outbreak, he said on Fox News that he had heard of \u201calmost miraculous and instantaneous recovery\u201d with treatments like cod liver oil, which he said was \u201cthe safest application of vitamin A.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While doctors sometimes administer high doses of vitamin A in a hospital to manage severe measles, experts do not recommend taking it without physician supervision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shortly after, doctors said they had encountered measles patients who had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/15\/health\/measles-texas-kennedy.html\" title=\"\">delayed critical medical treatment<\/a> in favor of staying home and treating themselves with some of the supplements Mr. Kennedy promoted. Some children with measles were given <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/25\/health\/measles-kennedy-vitamin-a.html\" title=\"\">toxic levels of vitamin A<\/a>, they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Osterholm said Mr. Kennedy\u2019s plan also assumed that people\u2019s beliefs about vaccines were fixed, when in reality, clear information about their purpose and safety had encouraged thousands of vaccinations in past outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite Mr. Kennedy\u2019s claims that Mennonites have \u201creligious objections\u201d to shots because they contain \u201cfetus debris,\u201d historians who study the community say it has no religious doctrine that bans vaccination, and vaccine experts say there is no fetal tissue in the M.M.R. shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Local doctors have instead pointed to misinformation about the safety of the shot \u2014 which Mr. Kennedy has helped perpetuate \u2014 as the primary reason their Mennonite patients opt their children out of vaccination.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
