To sign up for a child account, parents provide the tech company with personal data like their child\u2019s name and birth date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gemini has specific <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/gemini\/google-bard-expansion-teens\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">guardrails for younger users<\/a> to hinder the chatbot from producing certain unsafe content, said Karl Ryan, a Google spokesman. When a child with a Family Link account uses Gemini, he added, the company will not use that data to train its A.I.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Introducing Gemini for children could accelerate the use of chatbots among a vulnerable population as schools, colleges, companies and others grapple with the effects of popular generative A.I. technologies. Trained on huge amounts of data, these systems can produce humanlike text and realistic-looking images and videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google and other A.I. chatbot developers are locked in a fierce competition to capture young users. President Trump recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/04\/advancing-artificial-intelligence-education-for-american-youth\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">urged schools to adopt the tools<\/a> for teaching and learning. Millions of teenagers are already using chatbots as study aids, writing coaches and virtual companions. Children\u2019s groups warn the chatbots could pose serious <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/23\/technology\/characterai-lawsuit-teen-suicide.html\" title=\"\">risks to child safety<\/a>. The bots also sometimes make stuff up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">UNICEF, the United Nation\u2019s children\u2019s agency, and other children\u2019s groups have noted that the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/innocenti\/generative-ai-risks-and-opportunities-children\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">A.I. systems could confuse, misinform and manipulate<\/a> young children who may have difficulty understanding that the chatbots are not human.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGenerative A.I. has produced dangerous content,\u201d UNICEF\u2019s global research office said in a post on A.I. risks and opportunities for children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google acknowledged some risks in its email to families this week, alerting parents that \u201cGemini can make mistakes\u201d and suggesting they \u201chelp your child think critically\u201d about the chatbot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The email also recommended parents teach their child how to fact-check Gemini\u2019s answers. And the company suggested parents remind their child that \u201cGemini isn\u2019t human\u201d and \u201cnot to enter sensitive or personal info in Gemini.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite the company\u2019s efforts to filter inappropriate material, the email added, children \u201cmay encounter content you don\u2019t want them to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-1189og3 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">A Google email to parents this week warned about the risks of Gemini for children.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the years, tech giants have developed a variety of products, features and safeguards for teens and children. In 2015, Google <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/youtube-kids\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">introduced YouTube Kids<\/a>, a stand-alone video app for children that is popular among families with toddlers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other efforts to attract children online have prompted concerns from government officials and children\u2019s advocates. In 2021, Meta halted plans to introduce an Instagram Kids service \u2014 a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/10\/technology\/instagram-kids.html\" title=\"\">version of its Instagram app<\/a> intended for those under the age of 13 \u2014 after the attorneys general of several dozen states sent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/naag-letter-to-facebook\/download\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a letter to<\/a> the company saying the firm had \u201chistorically failed to protect the welfare of children on its platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some prominent tech companies \u2014 including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/04\/technology\/google-youtube-fine-ftc.html\" title=\"\">Google<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/31\/technology\/amazon-25-million-childrens-privacy.html\" title=\"\">Amazon<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/06\/ftc-will-require-microsoft-pay-20-million-over-charges-it-illegally-collected-personal-information\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> \u2014 have also paid multimillion-dollar fines to settle government complaints that they violated the Children\u2019s Online Privacy Protection Act. That federal law requires online services aimed at children to obtain a parent\u2019s permission before collecting personal information, like a home address or a selfie, from a child under 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Under the Gemini rollout, children with family-managed Google accounts would initially be able to access the chatbot on their own.
